One World One Heart 2011

UPDATE: The One World One Heart prize winner has been picked... and the result can be found HERE!!

Huge thanks to all who entered. It was so lovely to meet you and to discover some wonderful new blogs to visit.

******

Thanks to the lovely Marianne over at Ruffhaven, I came across this truly wonderful and joyful opportunity to connect to the many unseen yet glorious people out there who blog their hearts and souls out in this cyber community of ours.

One World One Heart for me represents a hope.

A wish.

A dream.

If only our World could come together in a more communal, connected, peaceful, and giving manner, this planet we all call home would become such a better place.

One World One Heart is an event envisioned, created, and orchestrated, by 'one whimsical bohemian' also known as Lisa!

There's heaps of give-aways in the form of 'door prizes' on all the participants' blogs (see my 'door prize' below), and lots of visiting new sites and getting to know amazing new people.

To join, simply visit the event's main page here, (on Lisa's lovely blog), read through the criteria, and blog about it.

Part of the criteria asks me to tell a bit about myself for first time visitors to Heartfire At Home.

Here goes....

I am Linda.

I teach, I design stuff, I blog, and I think an awful lot.

I am fascinated with owls, trees, butterflies, globes, maps, Celtic and Welsh mythology, books, funny or enlightening quotes, codes and ciphers, anything mysterious, the colour red, black holes and how on earth Space works, string theory, writing words that matter, beautiful patterns, inventing weird and wonderful things, other worlds and dimensions, all sorts of animals, art of many types, stationery and paper, and too many other things to mention!!

I don't like celery.

I do like the scent of limes.

Dust bunnies are not welcome in my house (but sneak in when I'm not looking).

Cats make me happy.... so do dogs, otters, owls, ocelots, crows, deer, mice, and squirrels for that matter.

Acorns are cute.

I LOVE my home. It is my own little world, and apart from my family and friends, the epi-centre of my life.

Holistic, atmospheric, interior design is the passion of my life.

I also teach primary school, and am pretty darn passionate about that too.

Some of my best friends are books.

Every room in my home has something red in it. It's like air to me.

If I didn't have music........ life would be very drab indeed.

Singing is in my blood and I perform regularly in plays and musical theatre.

And, dancing is a necessary requirement for my happiness!

********

Also as part of One World One Heart, I am to offer a 'door prize' to a travelling soul who wanders by my corner of the bloggy world and leaves a comment below.

Anyone from anywhere around the World can enter.

You don't need to be a 'follower', you don't need to leave a super long comment.... just pop in, leave me your email address, and after February the 17th (the finale of One World One Heart), I'll swoosh everyone through the generator at random.org and materialise one lucky winner to notify!

On to the prize......

In keeping with my feeling for the title One World One Heart, I've chosen to include a few items in my 'door prize'.

Two engraved river stones featuring the words HOPE and PEACE. Also a little set of cards entitled 'Jewels Of Wisdom' with wise words on them to motivate, inspire, and simply promote joy each and every day.

There's 24 of them, and they come in a box with a little wooden stand so you can swap them over when you feel like it, and display them where you get the most benefit from seeing and reading them.

I hope whoever wins this little gift package feels the vibes of happiness and gratefulness I will have as I wrap and then send them off to you. And I hope you gain some insight and enjoyment from the beautifully written words on the stones and each little 'jewel of wisdom' card.

Entries close on midnight the 17th of February (Pacific Standard USA time), and I will announce the winner the day after by posting here as well as in a new post. I will also email the winner to notify them of their good luck!

Happy entering everyone!!

Also, HERE'S THE PAGE where you can find all the other participants who'll be offering lovely 'door prizes' too! Be sure to visit and say hi!

********

It will be so nice to meet you all as I do the rounds of other One World One Heart participants, and thank you Lisa for creating and organising such a wonderful event. :)

Let the travels and sharing of hearts begin!!

New Sideboards Design

Monday Music - Some Daft Punk!

This is where it all began (personally one of my fave articles ever!!).

Music is SO important to the happiness of my home. :)

Now most Monday mornings when the working week looms I'll try to post a fave song or some music I'm listening to at the moment to provide some musical motivation.

So my little groovers......... here's today's installment!

*****************************

It's about time I had some Daft Punk over here for you to enjoy... (I know a few readers who love them - hi Nicole!), so here they are with One More Time!

Enjoy.

And don't forget, if you're looking for more great music, Bec over at Memory Garden often has a lovely song to listen to on Mondays as well!

And, as always when thinking of our 'Musical Must Haves' section...

Ask yourself: 'Do I L.O.V.E music?'

Which leads to: 'Have I got enough of it in my home and in my life?'

Because: Good interior design caters to ALL our senses, not just our eyes.... that's why I call it 'Atmospheric Design' instead!

Design line-up: lamps and pendants

I love Danish design and this lamp, called the IQ Light, is one of my all-time favourites, especially when lit at night. The one pictured below is a replica and sold on eBay.

Another mid-century cracker from Denmark (from collectables.articles.com):

I also love Moroccan lanterns and pendants that create such a lovely diffused light. This one is from Haysom lighting.

This one is a cheapy from B&Q, that we've got hanging in our hall way. Got a nice retro feel to it!

This pendant light is great for its simplicity and elegance and would go in any interior really (and I'd love it to in mine!). You can get it on eBay.

This pendant light with aluminium casting is reminiscent of the successful industrial era of the 60's. I love it! Wouldn't it look great in a pair above the kitchen table? It is available from Garden Trading.

Fabulous warm orange light coming from this retro beauty (found on eBay):

Interior Trends 2011

"At the beginning of June, the designers Patricia Urquiola (Milan) and Defne Koz (Chicago/Milan/Ankara) met up with the designer Harald Gründl (EOOS, Vienna), the textile designer Martin Leuthold (Jakob Schlaepfer, St. Gallen) and the editor Marco Velardi (apartamento, Milan/Barcelona) for a two-day imm cologne Trend Board workshop in Cologne. Here they filtered out four of the most important trends in furniture and interior design – trends that represent the different levels of style and lifestyle. Once again this year, these four interior trends are summed up in a trend book called Interior Trends 2011, complete with informative names, exemplary products and lavishly photographed settings."

The four interior trends for 2011 are:
  • Emotional austerity - whether it's the economy or the maturing of the population, there seems to be a philosophical change from getting things to a more Zen-like appreciation of less is more.
The colors and materials are dominated by nature: wood, leather, felt and plant fibres are complemented by technical fabrics; an earthy olive hue dominates over lush and pale shades of green and is joined by powder shades from rosé to brown.
  • Surprising empathy - consumers are pushing their designers to use new materials to come up with something simple but unique to that client.
The dominant colour is a cold grey, accompanied by ash grey and black and brightened up with vibrant dashes of citrus yellow and mandarin orange. A light taupe mediates between grey and white and adds a little softness to the colour scale.
  • Re-balancing - Maybe, we could say this concerns consumers looking for comfort and striving for a balance with nature. Think recycling or being eco-minded consumers.
A warm rhubarb-red radiates positive energy and warmth and is combined with creamy-white, corn-yellow and tan shades ranging from light brown all the way to terracotta.
  • Transforming perspectives - here we are taking materials we've used in one way and using them differently, with different finishes and new combinations.
A dark plum-blue provides the dominant background for both an artificial lavender shade and a dove-grey with a violet shimmer. Important features are emphasised in a caramel shade with a metallic-brown gleam.

Budget French Country look with Glam Results

You have heard it all before. I am so in love with our home and could not be happier with our fortunate find. The country cottage appeal fits my dream style. Previous occupants remodeled the kitchen sometime in the 1980's. Lots of cabinets and counter space. Open floor plan. Counter top range and insert oven. Perfect set up but the the green color counter tops need to go.They drive me crazy! Hopefully sometime in the future I will be able to accomplish my own updated touch.
As for you....
There is no need to go out and buy all new cabinetry when what you have is perfectly sound. New hardware is easy as well as a perfect way to update the cabinet style. You may be thinking the same as me. Ugly counters are not cheap to replace on a small budget. That is why I am excited to have found all these great products for going ugh... to wow!  in the kitchen. It's a face lift with out the heavy lifting. Like giving walls a fresh new color and not  installing new drywall

Taken during our first month here, our kitchen is an L shape. Below is just the main portion of the Kitchen room, minus the bottom of the L:
I found a product from Rustoleum which paints the counter top. The best part? It's $20 a can {at my local hardware store}. Covers 25 linear feet of average counter top space. There are 16 colors to choose from and it contains HomeShield(TM) Antimicrobial Protection which will protect the painted surface by inhibiting the growth of mold and mildew and other odor or stain causing microbes. Cool, ay?
This is the color style I would like to achieve for my kitchen:
Tile range top back wall. A light wall color and one cabinet pair with glass front panels between the sink & range.
As for that yellowing refrigerator? How about some Appliance Epoxy spray! This will give a smooth washable surface, renewing your appliance in your color of 5 choices. For the exterior of appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry machines, and other indoor metal applications (cabinets, tables). For me, it takes away the off white fridge to a black, matching the other appliances.
To add character to it's doors, how about some Chalkboard paint or...this had me shocked to see, DRy Erase board surface paint! {Apply to metal, wood, masonry, drywall}. My wee ones adore the chalkboard Fridge doors they see on the Nick show "Good Luck Charlie", which has them begging for chalkboard surfaces.
This would also be a nice touch to cabinets. Chalkboard paint on the the main face board, leaving the trimming in a contrast color, matching the rest of the cabinetry Perfect for jotting down notes like Buy crackers or Keep out of the cookies! Another WOW factor... How about making those cabinet panels Magnetic!
I wish I could share the pictures of these amazing ideas, unfortunately, the site will not allow picture save. So click here* to go there*. Click on the Indoor index card to see these great Budget friendly Kitchen Makeovers.
Now I must find a product which will clean off the nasty build up and lighten the cabinet color. I rather like the light wood. Much easier to clean with the trimming, compared to a painted surface.Grime & dust appears to build up faster on the face trimmings when painted.
**Rustoleum is in no way affiliated with The Unusual Farm Chick {and vice versa}. They have no clue I am writing this post. Of course, if they should feel so inclined, I am open to any of these great products to arrive at my front door. For experimental purposes of course. Just throwing it out there.
Sweet dreams,
~Tammie
