Zingy Lime + Coconut Smoothie

I was asked to do a few special posts over at Babble this month on nurturing, and one of my posts included this delicious recipe for a smoothie we make all the time here at home; a Zingy Lime and Coconut Smoothie.  It's zingy because our son came up with the idea to add an extra squeeze of lime juice at the end, which makes for a rather refreshing snappy kind of drink.  It's also fun for him because we pull out the drill for some fresh coconut milk.  Of course you don't have to drill a coconut every time you make it (the one in the carton is just as good) –but it makes for a fun smoothie making experience (especially for boys and some girls)!.  Check out my our recipe here!

Congrats, Company C!

I noticed that the 24th annual ARTS Award for Area Rugs was presented to Company C. The ARTS Awards celebrate retailers, manufacturers and sales representatives for excellence in 25 different categories across the decorative home accessories industry.

I was greatly impressed by the designs and bright colors of Company C's rugs!

Mesh Office Chairs vs. Leather Office Chairs

Luxury Leather Office Chairs

Mesh office chairs and leather office chairs are by far the most popular and top selling seating solutions on the market today. These two industry leading chair styles offer a variety of features and benefits for users in any office environment. This article compares these chair styles thoroughly to assist you in your search for the perfect office chair. Enjoy!

Mesh Office Chairs

Round 1: Comfort

Far and away the most important factor of any chair is comfort. Both leather and mesh chair styles offer a variety of attributes that greatly contribute to this vital aspect. First, lets cover the comfort friendly features of mesh chairs.

Mesh chairs were originally designed as a modern remedy to office seating needs. This style of chair is composed of a breathable mesh back that keeps users cool while working. Chairs with mesh backs offer excellent back support as they boast firm construction and allow for a variety of interesting chair shapes. With hundreds of versatile styles available, a mesh chair is undoubtedly on the market to meet your individual needs. High end mesh seating solutions are often able to support up to 500 lbs. and offer spine mimicking features sure to provide optimal comfort.

It's no secret that quality leather is always a great way to showcase comfort and class. When it comes to leather chairs the same is true. Chairs featuring leather upholstery often offer excellent amounts of padding, and in some cases memory foam. A quality leather will keep you snug and cozy while working. The feel of a high end leather is definitely noteworthy. This is a major reason why high end executives choose this form of seating for their office needs. One downside of leather is that it changes with the temperature of a room. During the summer months a leather chair can actually make you hot while working. In winter, the days first sit can often be chilly. Depending on the leather grade used for your chair, these may be factors worth looking into.

Ergonomics is defined as the study of efficiency in working environments. For that reason, it's important to notate that both of these chair styles offer excellent user friendly features sure to improve your comfort and day to day productivity. When it comes to the mechanical aspects underneath your chair the bout is a tie. All chairs come standard with factory features chosen for the particular model by designers and industry professionals. Many mesh and leather chairs feature the exact same mechanisms and in that way they are about equal. The real difference comes when discussing the back. As previously mentioned, some high end leather solutions are standard with memory foam. This makes a huge difference for those spending long hours at the desk. However, the slight edge has to go to mesh in this regard. The variety of shapes, styles, and benefits out way those of leather. In the long run, the winner of this round is mesh chairs by minimal margin.

Leather Executive Chairs

Round 2: Price

One important buying factor of any product is price. It's important to stick to a budget when purchasing chairs of any kind for yourself or your business. Depending on the chair you choose and price range dictated for your purchase, this round can go either way. Discount office chairs with mesh backs can start as low as $50 while luxury office chairs can run in the thousands. The same is true when it comes to leather seating. Price is fully determined by the grade of material used, brand, and features included. Overall, this round is a tie as it's purely dictated by budget and the features necessary for your business to work effectively.

Ergonomic Mesh Chairs

Round 3: Longevity

Chair life is an important factor that deserves serious attention when shopping. For comparison sake, let's say we are comparing two chairs of equal price. In terms of ergonomics, we've discussed that many chairs can be outfitted with the same mechanical features and for this reason their isn't much of a dispute. However, any consumer should spend the necessary time to review materials being used on chairs of interest. Believe it or not, several competitive seating manufacturers use leathers and mesh materials from the same textile and upholstery brands. While mesh is extremely durable, leather is definitely given the edge in round 3. In terms of longevity a mesh material will more than likely ware and stretch before a leather gives way. Exceptions can be made for both materials, but in most cases and comparisons, leather takes the round.

After three hard fought rounds the overall decision is a tie. Unfortunately too many factors contribute to the overall comfort, value, and longevity to determine an overall winner. When investing in modern executive chairs or home seating of any kind it's important to take into consideration the needs of yourself and staff first. Both mesh office chairs and leather office chairs are an important investment for any business. Meeting with professionals can be a huge help in the shopping process. Setting a budget and taking the time to understand valuable ergonomic features will help you to make an educated shopping decision that works well for years to come. Notable mesh and leather chair brands include Mayline Office Chairs, Herman Miller, HON, Eurotech Seating, and several others. No matter your preference, doing your homework on each manufacturer will yield excellent savings and benefits for your business.

Magazine Peek: March's Chatelaine

A few pics from a feature in the March issue of Chatelaine Magazine highlighting the townhouse of their Associate Home Editor, Julia Black.  My fave –the mounted cupboards in the dining room Julia created - making it look like they float and the swinging lighting by the bed with the scrapwood headboard. I picked up a digital copy of Chatelaine through Zinio, click here to see.  Photo by Roberto Caruso for Chatelaine Magazine.

Dispatches from Dublin: The Fumbally

A busy day at The Fumbally means every entree sells out. It means after closing, owners Luca D'Alfonso and Aisling Rogerson sink into chairs at a table near the register with a few of their staff, Luca pouring a few small glasses of red wine and rolling a cigarette. Luca jokes, “We prepare for a war every day.” But the vibe inside The Fumbally is anything but hostile. The organizers of Dublin’s successful Flea Market and its cafe are just over seven months into their new venture with The Fumbally Cafe and enjoying packed tables and busy lines for their barrista. Set outside of the city centre in Dublin 8, The Fumbally is chic with high ceilings and spare walls, comfy couches and hulking, handbuilt wooden tables. The vibe is attracting everyone from members of the Guinness family to business types to artists topped out in kooky hats. But for Luca and Aisling, what they are building is more than a cafe, it's a community. So in addition to serving breakfast, lunch and treats every day except Sunday, The Fumbally is also host to gigs by up and coming bands, and even early morning yoga classes.

I sat down with Luca at the end of one of these busy days to chat about what inspires him, the menu, and the overall vibe at The Fumbally.

Mini DIY Round-Up: Hello + Envelope Bunting

I came across a few inspirational things earlier this week. A wire wrapped word tutorial over at Craft Tuts  and how sweet is this idea to make bunting using envelopes as seen in the March issue of Ideas Mag? To make them you can either make the envelopes (they used scrapbooking papers and a template they provide) or you could use any envelope really (of course)!  Not much more explanation than that - but just that it makes me super happy! The March issue project is by Lizele Cloete | Photos Ed O'Riley. And lastly (below) a choice of pretty printable gift tags from Ellinee.

I can't get over this glaze on these ceramic containers from Object and Totem, a small objects and jewelry studio based in Philadelphia, PA. The black pearlized effect is simply stunning, reminds me of updated version of mid-century style.  They also make some pretty sweet jewelry using wheel thrown beads on corded trim. Modern Reception Furniture Trends to Watch in 2013

Modern style is always a hot topic amongst interior designers and consumers alike, and staying up to date is essential! That being said, the arrival of 2013 has brought to light several hot new reception furniture trends that businesses should be aware of. This article highlights these top trends to keep you informed before starting your next office makeover project!

Trend 1: Build Up Not Out

Aberdeen Reception Furniture

With space being at a premium, interior designers and office furniture professionals are regularly suggesting solutions for maximizing square footage. One of these tips is to build up instead of out. All to often wall space goes wasted that could be used for storage and accent furniture. This modern idea includes the use of overhead storage cabinets and hutches as opposed to low wall cabinetry which reduces the overall usable footprint of a waiting area. The good news is that this trend is just catching on. This means that most of the wall mounting products like presentation boards all feature a contemporary style that will keep your area at the forefront of the modern office furniture movement.

Trend 2: Beam Seating
Modern Beam Seating Configuration
Perhaps no form of modern office seating is more popular than this trending style. Utilizing reception beam seating is an excellent way to save space and money while showcasing industry leading style. Top solutions include those from the OFM, Inc. NET series as well as the Sonic Beam Chair by Global Total Office. No matter your choice, Beam seating configurations are always an excellent way to earn your space a host of compliments. Some top models even offer the ability to add small office tables for added versatility.

Trend 3: Curved Reception Desks

Large Curved Reception Desk

It seems that businesses just can't get enough of curved reception desks for their waiting rooms and lounge areas. This modern form of reception station is selling like hot cakes. Top styles like the Marque Reception Station by OFM are an excellent example of this hot new trend. Desks like this offer an all encompassing and welcoming feel to any visitor area. The curved design showcases modern style and well rounded appeal. A curved reception desk increases the amount of usable worksurface while at the same time maximizes office square footage. Units are available for individual or multi user applications.

Trend 4: Glass Reception Tables

Glass Coffee Table

It seems that the use of glass furniture in the workplace will be a huge hit this year. And when it comes to the reception area, several new products are available. New modern glass reception tables from collections like the Profile Series by OFM are always an excellent choice. Additionally, the Dawson Series Coffee Table by Global Total Office is an excellent way to pull in the use of wood while still maintaining a contemporary feel. Glass offers a neutral tone that will match any seating upholstery or wood finish. The versatility of glass coffee tables and end tables is a main reason for this always popular trend.

Benefits of Furniture Reupholstery for Homeowners

There are a myriad of reasons as to why reupholstering your furniture can improve your home, and your standard of living. Check out some of the reasons now!

Furniture reupholstery is a homeowner’s best weapon against the approaching forces of decay. Every room has a distinct personality, but is subject to chaotic forces like wear and tear. Sofa reupholstery can help protect that favorite piece of furniture and preserve the playfulness of the living room or quiet reading spot when the family is away. Of course, every humble abode may require more work than simple couch reupholstery due to the sheer amount of furniture. While buying a home is a big investment, maintaining the furniture can be as well. Despite this, there are a number of benefits involved when reupholstering furniture.

Furniture repair can enhance a home in so many ways. The first major benefit is the positivity it can bring into a room. Couches and tables are always prone to some form of damage, whether from the family dog confusing the fixture for its favorite chew toy, or the kids getting a little too excited for company and spilling juice all over the table. When guests arrive, most homeowners want to be able to show off their space and have furniture that is inviting. By consistently managing repairs and damage, any room can look as fresh and new as it was upon first entering the home. Those little nicks will be nothing and every homeowner can feel confident and comfortable hosting a wide variety of events.

Dealing with immediate damage is an excellent preventative measure since that little mark can morph into a nasty scar, marring the piece you were so proud of purchasing. Also, tastes can change when you’ve been with the same piece of furniture for years. If you feel your décor is starting to look stale, then consider furniture reupholstery! Search for different types of cloth and fabrics to spruce up the piece. Transitioning from a blue to a red can make all the difference. Pushing the couch over to the left side can free up more walking space, or leaving it directly under a wide series of windows can allow for more sunlight. Taking advantage of space can be another cost effective method to support reupholstering.

Some damage can seem irreversible, so there are many things homeowners should consider before deciding on whether to reupholster or replace. By remaining vigilant about the damage imposed on furniture, homeowners can cut costs since repairs can be significantly less than the cost of replacements. Depending on the longevity of the couch, inspect it before deciding to repair. The most expensive part of a couch is the cushions, so reupholstering should be a primary option since retailers can run high prices.

Ultimately, reupholstering that favorite couch or sofa can do wonders for your home. Taking out those tears and scratches can help maintain the look and feel of your home. That couch in the living room may say “welcome!” but if its tattered or old, guests might think it says “go away!” And as the kids grow older, they want to look forward to coming home and enjoying some rest after a long semester. While price can be a big decision maker, don’t let that prevent any transformations from happening. A happy home equals a happy life.

Weekend Project: Doily Pendants

Photo Jean-Marc Wullschleger for Real Living magazine

Inspiration this week comes from fashion and interior stylist, Anne Millet's dining room and her lovely doily pendant lighting as seen in March's issue of Real Living magazine.  Such a fun and simple idea.  Although there is no actual instructions for it in the magazine (and nothing I could find on her blog), this could easily be translated using the ever popular lace bowl DIY.  All you need of course are some pendants (I found this cheaper version at Home Depot - just remove the clamps).

See what they might look like if hanging (Photo Dry Design)

Or you could make the lace bowls and then cut a hole at the top, and use IKEA HEMMA cord sets instead. If you need sources for doilies - there are heaps of them online at Etsy. I found some fabric stiffener here and then I think after that you're set!

PS. I found a close-up of similar lights at Anne's blog here- and after closer inspection you can probably forego the stiffener if you like a more casual feel to them and just glue gun the doilies to the lighting if you wished.

Happy weekend everyone!

Film Interiors: Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

Picking up where Coco before Chanel leaves off, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky tells of Chanel's affair with a married Stravinsky. Having worked her way out of poverty and dependence on her lovers, Chanel invites the Russian composer and his family to stay at her country house. The house is a pure reflection of Chanel's tastes and its uniform style (almost all black and white with art deco lines) is testament to her independence. When shown her bedroom, Stravinsky's wife Katarina asks Chanel if she doesn't like color. Chanel responds that she likes black. The few pieces of color are provided by Katarina's tapestries, which she drapes around her bedroom in an effort to make it feel more like home. The bedrooms are the most dramatic spaces -- I particularly love the Moorish touches in the girls' room, punctuated by banners that hang from the ceiling around the entire room.
