9 Weekend Project DIYs

Happy summer weekend! What you up to? I'm wishing I had that hanging bed (above/below) already set up in our backyard patio that's what I'm up to.  If you're searching for a nice little project, I've collected some good ones this week.  See below for the links. Let me know if you try one!

1. DIY Pallet Swing Bed
How dreamy would this be to relax on on a lazy dazy summer afternoon? Get the how here to from The Merrythought.

2. A Copper Tube/Cement Base Lamp
A relatively easy project that looks difficult (and rather modern). From Look What I Made.

3. DIY Shelves With Belt Straps
A nice version of the shelf belt strap DIY, this one with thinner belts and shelf. From At Home In Love.

4. Printable Take-Out Menu Organizer
Chelsea of Lovely Indeed has the tips and printables for this rather cute take-out menu organizer.  Get the downloads here.

5. Washi Tape Pencils and Notebooks
Get out your favorite washi tapes for this fun little project even the kids could do.  Visit Lia Griffith for the how to.

6. Paper Wreath Garland (Printable)
Make this adorable paper leaf garland for your next garden party with this printable and how-to from Hello Hydrangea.  Get the download and instructionss here.

7. DIY Sea Salt Soap
This is one of my faves (definitely hope to make) - sea salt soap.  (Love the mold).  From Hello Home Shoppe.

8. Elk Camp Solar Lanterns
A clever DIY project for taking camping.  A solar lantern from the folks at Camp Wander.  Get the how-to here.

9.  What is summer without a good jean cut-off DIY?  This one is really cute with it's lacey addition. Get the instructions at Pearmama.  Also while there, be sure to check out her Aztec cut-off version - another fun idea.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Project: Easy DIY Geometric Beads

It's a long weekend here in Canada, and the weather looks like it's going to be a warm one!  What will you be up to? Feel like whittling away on some wood? I love this little project I found today from Kate of Minieco out of the UK.  She says it's super easy; just a few wooden beads and a dremel sanding tool and you're on your way!  She even made a few necklaces out of them.  Sounds like a good weekend project to me. Click here to get the how-to!  And happy weekend project making!

Weekend Project | Download a Masterpiece

I love this little project I found the other day from Ideas Magazine (out of S. Africa).  The Rijksmuseum, the world's leading museum of Dutch Golden Age masterpieces has a cool website where you can, (and they allow you to and encourage you to), download works from its collection to make them your own.  In the images shown here, Flow Magazine's design team produced  some gorgeous adaptations from their downloads from the Rijksstudio site and then Idea Magazine used their paper for this creative project.  From wallpaper, ottomans, pillows and more, the options really could be endless. Choose artworks and download your own pieces and adapt them using these as inspiration. I picked up my digital copy of Ideas Magazine through Zinio.com. Photo Ed O'Riley.

Weekend Project | DIY Wooden Beaded Tassel Necklace

Guest post by Anna Liesemeyer of In Honor of Design

Excited to be a guest here on Poppytalk and share with you a fun DIY that will doesn't require any jewelry making skills! I recently saw a beautiful version of this necklace at Anthropologie but it was a little too large for me, so I created a similar DIY that is very simple to make and fun to layer!
Besides the spray paint, I found all of the supplies in the etsy supply section!

Supplies:
Large Faceted Wooden Beads
Medium Wooden Beads
Small Wooden Beads
(size and shape can vary)
Neon leather cord
Tassel, 2-3 inches long
Neon Spray paint

1) Spray paint your tassel the color of your choice and let dry. You may need a few coats. I loved the way the neon looked with the darker beads.
2) Pre-measure your leather cord (make sure its long enough to drape over your head) and string your beads starting with the smallest. Make sure to weave the cord through your tassel half way through.

3) Tie a double knot on either end in between sizes to get more color in your necklace.

Finish by tying your ends with a double knot. Simple, right?

Weekend Project : Brass Chandelier

Perhaps you've seen this DIY already, but just in case not, here's a pretty amazing chandelier DIY from the folks at One Kings Lane.  Stylist Megan Pflug offers up a step-by-step guide on how to make this beautiful brass piece inspired by a design by Københavns Møbelsnedkeri. She mentions she put this beauty together in less than an hour and that it was just like playing with tinker toys! Apparantly the hardest part is ordering the brass pipe parts. Get the how-to by clicking here.  Via Hodge Podge.

Weekend Project | Wallpapered Stairs

I love this wallpapered stairs idea from Sarah Moore Vintage (out of the UK). She papered the risers of her stairs using different samples of wallpaper she's collected applying with PVA glue and a coat of clear varnish.  Sarah also just released a book, Vintage Home by Sarah Moore, which now has piqued my interest. Thought it would make the perfect weekend project! Visit Sarah Moore Vintage online at sarahmoorevintage.com. Happy weekend!

Weekend Project | Cupboard with Decoupage Doilies

This week's inspiration/idea for a weekend project is this adorable decoupaged wardrobe found in the May '13 issue of Ideas Magazine using vintage doilies. The ivory and white on white makes for a subtle romantic piece and the project could be translated onto any furniture piece (like a back of a chair, an old dresser, etc).  I love this. The how-to is pretty much your regular decoupage technique;

1. Clean surface
2. Sand
3. Apply the piece your decoupaging (using masking tape)
4. Coat using a sponge roller with one layer of mod podge, let dry, repeat with another layer of mod podge, dry and then finish with a coat of varnish.

You can get the exact how-to from Ideas Magazine (May issue) - I picked up my copy through Zinio.com .  Photo by Ed O'Riley | Project by Lizel Cloete, Ciskia Hanekom and Jeanne Potgieter for Ideas Magazine. Happy Weekend!

Weekend Project | Spring Appliqué Pillows

By Sania Pell | Photography Penny Wincer for Inside Out Magazine

This little project I found over at Inside Out Magazine's website is such a great way to bring a little spring into your decor! Appliqué pillows using patterned fabrics with flowers and birds that can be cut out.  Sania Pell who produced this piece, started by finding a pair of birds, which were on an apron she found in a sale and then added silk flowers and leaves to it and to a few other pillows to create a pretty set for the bed.  So perhaps looking for an old apron or curtains that you don't mind cutting into, or even something found at the thrift shop would work.  Pick up a few silk flowers, sew them on and you're set!  I especially love the floral one (so pretty)!. Click here to get the how-to and happy weekend!

Weekend Project: Accordion Sconce (Ikea Hack)

I had a bit of a lightbulb (pardon the pun) moment a bit back when I was posting about Nickey Kehoe Interiors and the accordian wall lamps I saw (and loved) everywhere.  I knew I had something similar hanging around the house somewhere and realized it was my IKEA FRÄCK accordian bathroom mirror.  I also found an old $5 IKEA clamp light (just hanging around doing nothing) and so I decided to use it and try to merge the two into a simple hack that anyone could do. And well, here it is!  The only thing I had to buy was a plaque (to secure it to the wall better) and we were set!

Materials Used:
IKEA FRÄCK accordian bathroom mirror
A clamp light, (mine was an old one from IKEA) but a small aluminum clamp light would probably look even better (I will probably exchange mine out thinking about it now)
A wall plaque or piece of wood (I picked up mine at Michael's)
2 screws
Paint (optional)

How-To:
Remove the mirror from the accordian portion of the fixture if attached (usually they are already apart when you buy them).  Our clamp light had one hole (in one part of the clamp) but not in the other - so we had to drill a hole through the other end in order for us to slip the clamp light in replace of the mirror of the accordion fixture. We slipped the clamp part of the light through the metal piece where the mirror would go, leaving the top part of the light clamp on the outside of the screw, so that it wouldn't fall down.  But you could also just have it slip in between the two.

At this point you could paint the plaque if you wished it to be a different color - however I chose to keep our's white to blend in with the wall colour, but black would look pretty awesome too.  Also if you wish, you could paint the accordion part (which I was thinking about) but opted out to.  But I do love the look of a black plaque and a black accordion - just like the ones found at Nickey Kehoe Interiors - so I just might paint them later.

Once you've decided to paint or not (and the paint is dry of course), you can then attach the accordion part to the plaque by centering it - marking holes where the screws will go with a pencil.  And then just attach with the screws.  We did this so it's more secure to the wall and won't eventually end up falling off due to usage. But you don't have to use a plaque if you wanted to skip that part.

Next just attach to the wall and you're done! I placed ours over my old piano my Mom so generously gave to us this past year and which desperately needed lighting nearby it. It's so nice to have the piano around again and to be able to see the music now too!

Wishing you a lovely weekend!
~Jan

Weekend Project: Doily Pendants

Photo Jean-Marc Wullschleger for Real Living magazine

Inspiration this week comes from fashion and interior stylist, Anne Millet's dining room and her lovely doily pendant lighting as seen in March's issue of Real Living magazine.  Such a fun and simple idea.  Although there is no actual instructions for it in the magazine (and nothing I could find on her blog), this could easily be translated using the ever popular lace bowl DIY.  All you need of course are some pendants (I found this cheaper version at Home Depot - just remove the clamps).

See what they might look like if hanging (Photo Dry Design)

Or you could make the lace bowls and then cut a hole at the top, and use IKEA HEMMA cord sets instead. If you need sources for doilies - there are heaps of them online at Etsy. I found some fabric stiffener here and then I think after that you're set!

PS. I found a close-up of similar lights at Anne's blog here- and after closer inspection you can probably forego the stiffener if you like a more casual feel to them and just glue gun the doilies to the lighting if you wished.

Happy weekend everyone!

Weekend Project: A Crazy Pom Pom Rug

Pip Lincolne has a fun and crazy (and I bet soft) pom pom rug project in the latest issue of Frankie Magazine - that I'm loving!  She says it's "easier than skinning a fraggle" (not sure what that is - but we believe her) and is made with obviously a heap of pom poms attached to a piece of hessian (which I think in North American terms is either burlap or sisal).  Whatever the case it's a fun piece and one I wouldn't mind wiggling my toes into first thing in the morning.  I grabbed my digital issue of Frankie Magazine from Zinio.  Click here to pick up a copy.  (Photo | Hilary Walker).

Weekend Project: Setting the Scene

A fun Valentine idea coming from Ideas Magazine out of South Africa that I came across recently (which by the way is fast becoming a fave magazine)! Since Valentines is less than two weeks away, I thought this was fun inspiration for then or anytime.  Setting the stage for a romantic meal for two.  Loving the red and pink painted chairs, the little chalk drawn window with a real shelf, the paper lanterns and yum this chocolate kiss desert (complete with a little arrow made using a thin dowel/or chopstick and paper heart and arrow end using a glue gun)!  Fun!  I picked up my copy of Ideas Magazine via Zinio.

Weekend Project: Winter Bulbs

I just took down the Christmas tree yesterday and now I'm longing for more green. I remembered this image from Weekday Carnival where she planted a few in a series of clear jars and glasses for the holidays.  A perfect January weekend project don't you think?  Happy weekend!

Weekend Project: Sleigh Bell DIY

Heather of Restless Oasis sent over this DIY she created recently for a fun set of sleigh bells.  After looking into buying them and realizing they were over $100 –she set out to make one of her own (and rather successfully we might add).  Using a men's used belt and a container of bells from her local craft store she crafted up this holiday accessory in no time.  Visit her blog here for the how-to!  Happy making!
