DIY - Dress Up a Vintage Hat

Hello and Happy Spring! It's Mariah again from Everything Golden, here to share another DIY project.  This month, I dressed up a vintage hat with some hand dyed fabric and feathers.

Here's how you create the fabric band...

What you'll need: 1. Some natural fabric like cotton, silk or wool. 2. Fiber Reactive Procion Dye 3. Salt 4. Soda Ash 5. A needle and thread 6. A small jar

Instructions:
Cut a piece of fabric about 2 inches wide and determine the length by wrapping the fabric around the hat and allow for about 4 inches extra on each side, like so.

Then wash your fabric to prepare for the dye.

How to prepare your dye bath:
Combine 2 tsp dye, 4tbs salt, 2 tsp soda ash and add a very small amount of warm water and stir until you have a paste. Then add about 1 cup warm water. Use rubber gloves and only use utensils designated solely for dying. Do not use your regular kitchen utensils. Finally, cram your piece of fabric into a small jar and pour two or more colors into the jar. Let sit for about 5 minutes, then rinse the fabric until all the dye is gone.

After your fabric is dry, fold it in half lengthwise and press with an iron. Sew two sides then turn inside out and press again. Then wrap around your hat, tie once on the side of the hat and tuck the ends under. Then with a needle and matching thread tack the ends down using an invisible stitch. Pick a feather that matches your mood and walla!

Weekend Project | DIY Wooden Beaded Tassel Necklace

Guest post by Anna Liesemeyer of In Honor of Design

Excited to be a guest here on Poppytalk and share with you a fun DIY that will doesn't require any jewelry making skills! I recently saw a beautiful version of this necklace at Anthropologie but it was a little too large for me, so I created a similar DIY that is very simple to make and fun to layer!
Besides the spray paint, I found all of the supplies in the etsy supply section!

Supplies:
Large Faceted Wooden Beads
Medium Wooden Beads
Small Wooden Beads
(size and shape can vary)
Neon leather cord
Tassel, 2-3 inches long
Neon Spray paint

1) Spray paint your tassel the color of your choice and let dry. You may need a few coats. I loved the way the neon looked with the darker beads.
2) Pre-measure your leather cord (make sure its long enough to drape over your head) and string your beads starting with the smallest. Make sure to weave the cord through your tassel half way through.

3) Tie a double knot on either end in between sizes to get more color in your necklace.

Finish by tying your ends with a double knot. Simple, right?

DIY Sunglasses Pouches Using Fabric Markers

Contributor post by Rachael Smith of Penelope and Pip

Now that Spring is peeking it's happy face through all the winter gloom, it's time to dust off those summer sunglasses and get ready for long hikes and beach adventures. If you're like me though, you probably have a few pairs of glasses that can be found in the bottom of a handbag or on the dashboard of the car that are constantly getting scratched.

You can keep all your glasses scratch-free however with these cute geometric pouches that only take a few minutes to make.

What you'll need:

1. Calico or plain fabric
2. Fabric markers
3. Scissors
4. Needle and thread (or a sewing machine)

Step 1: Places your sunglasses on the fabric and cut a rectangle out leaving at at least a 1.5 cm seam allowance the whole way around. My rectangle measured 20cm by 24cm.

Step 2: Create a cross pattern by making random crosses with you fabric pen all over your material. Make sure you go right to the edge.

Step 3: Fill in the spaces between your crosses using different colours.

Step 4: Fold over the top of your fabric twice to create a small seam. Sew the seam using a straight stitch. Make sure you start and finish on the back. Using a sewing machine will mean this step takes only a few seconds!

Step 5: Fold your fabric in half lengthways, right sides together and using a straight stitch, sew around two sides of the pouch, leaving a hole in the top where the folded seam is. Trim the corners to make the pouch neater and fold it right way out.

You could give your pouch a press with the iron to flatten the seams and then you're ready to make some more!

Using simple patterns like dots and lines, you'll be able to create a pouch for every bag and car dashboard in no time.

DIY Faceted Clay Rings

Contributor post by Chelsea of Lovely Indeed

I've been loving the metallic trend that's happening right now, and I especially love it when it's combined with cool geometric shapes. So I dreamed up a simple little DIY that puts my two loves together, and the result is pretty cool, if I do say so myself! I'm loving these stackable, interchangeable clay rings.

If you want to make a few, gather your materials!
  • modeling clay (I used Fimo Classic)
  • X-Acto knife
  • oven and baking pan
  • liquid gilding (I used Martha Stewart brand in Gold, Brass, and Copper)
  • small paintbrushes
  • bamboo skewers

Start by molding a small amount of clay into a strip that's square on all sides. Make sure the strip is long enough to wrap around your ring finger.

Contributor post by Ashley Rose of Sugar and Cloth

What do you give to someone who already has everything? A DIY leather pouch made just by you for all of their little somethings.

I'll teach you how to modify a craft store leather bag kit to make this project modern, well made, and cost effective while still being the work of your hands. As the icing on the cake, you can personalize it by leather stamping or painting their name, a pattern, quote, you get the idea...

DIY Wool Felt iPhone Sleeves

Guest post by Marisa of Omiyage

It seems like everybody and their brother (sister, uncle, grandmother & niece) has a smartphone these days. 4 out of 5 of the adults in our not-terribly-tech-savvy family has an iPhone. So why not play into the cellphone obsession and gift handmade iPhone sleeves this holiday season?

Simple to make, no fancy or expensive materials needed.  So simple, in fact, you could whip up a whole stack in one afternoon. It's a fantastic way to give something personal and tackle an extensive gift list at the same time. Plus these sleeves make great gifts for the hard-to-buy-or-make-for guys in your life!

What makes these sleeves extra-special is the clever pocket created between the 2 pieces of felt. Perfect for slipping your transit pass, credit card or cash into.

I'll give you the dimensions to create sleeves which can fit iPhone 4, 4S or 5 models. But, you could easily adapt this project to fit any phone.
