What Does Your Front Door Say About You?

I love driving through Forest Heights up above NW Cornell. Beautiful homes built along winding streets with beautiful doors. Bridget A Otto writes that the front door color reveals character traits of the owner.

  • Red: Tells the world to "look at me!" This bright color says you're not afraid of standing out or saying what's on your mind.
  • White: Says you prefer things that are organized, neat and clean. Even if your home isn't always this way, you wish it were.
  • Green: Tells the world that you have traditional values and enjoy being a member of the community.
  • Black: Says you're consistent, conservative and reserved in your manner as well as your approach to color. With a black door you're saying your design style is timeless rather than trendy.
  • Blue: Tells people you are naturally at ease in most situations and people are attracted to your easygoing personality.
  • Yellow: Says you have a personality similar to green, but a bit less traditional. You're most likely a leader or organizer of a group.
  • Purple: Reveals a "free-spirited" person who is comfortable taking risks, thinking differently and dreaming big.
We have a black door greeting visitors and I would say that's pretty accurate. I wonder if Bridget Otto has a purple door.

Remodel Or Move

Bridget Otto writes about the costs of remodeling and she quotes Dan Fritschen, founder of RemodelorMove.com He offers four tips on getting answers.

Checking out RemodelorMove.com, I found a lot of discussion about remodeling versus moving. This site really heps answer that dilemma. In our neighborhood, I know one couple who remodeled their house, even taking their house higher by adding a second story. They looked all over this area and concluded that staying put and remodeling was cheaper.

We are seeing other homes that are completely gutted down to the foundation and rebuilt turning a $400,000 house into a bigger house valued at $800,000 to $900,000 house. They really must like this Grant High neighborhood and its nearness to downtown!

Bridfget A. Otto Saturday

House and Gardens arrived this morning with The Oregonian and friends of ours were almost everywhere.

In one we meet Audrey Theis' who moved from a condo in Sellwood to Raleigh Hills. Bridget Otto writes that Theis "...loved the traditional layout of the house and knew she could plant a vegetable garden, turn one bedroom into an office, and have the space she so desired to accommodate her extended family."

She chose for guidance Gilyn McKelligon of Gilyn McKelligon Interiors, 503-297-5659, whose office is in the area for interior design guidance and Carol Director of Scott Director's Custom Upholstery & Accents, 503-292-9411.

In the second article, also written by Bridget Otto, we get another look at "What you need to know about selecting, working with an interior designer."This article features interior designers Susan Grady of gradyinteriors.com  and Terrance Mason, of terrancemasoninteriors.com. Both Grady and Mason are well-qualified and on the Board of Directors of NW society of Interior Designers (NWSID). Terrance Mason is the current president of NWSID.

The information is excellent and hiring a professional can save you money and avoid mistakes.

News From Bridget Otto

Todd Jantz of JD Madison fame and more recently Madison Millinger announced he is closing the Pearl District store.

He says business for their high-end rugs and furnishings has been just slowing down too much over the last few years and he no longer has the resources or energy to keep things going.

"I'm calling Portland the new Detroit," he said.

With 15 years behind him in the business, he said he is just exhausted and worn out.
Everything in the store is 70 percent off for the remaining three weeks the doors will be open.
We are sorry to see them close. Many designers are reporting better business and when you go through this, your primary thought is, "Can I hold on until it turns?" You either run out of cash or just get tired of the battle. Portland will miss Madison Millinger

Bridget A Otto On Saturday

Homes & Gardens of the Northwest arrived this morning bundled in the Oregonian and there's a new article from Bridget A Otto this time featuring interior designer Noelle Penn and the help she gave to high school friend Emily Parrott-Werner. Not only did Penn help Emily with color selection after a broken pipe flooded her home, but Penn saw an obvious flaw, to her, in the home design. Removing an unnecessary wall not only opened up the family room for parties, but opened up the dining room. Three cheers for Noelle Penn at Noelle for Interiors.

It's Bridget Otto Thursday!

Bridget Otto talks with Noelle Penn today in In the mood for Color.

"I can't imagine how depressed I'd be to come home to beige walls," she says, her trademark laugh punctuating the comment.

We can't either and we were so glad to be invited to the unveiling of Bob Lahatt's work at his client's condo on Westover Sunday. Bob invited us to meet his client and to see how he used the Fabricut, Duralee and Sherrill fabrics. There were mkany people there we knew and the catered food was terrific. We loved lahatt's use of color on the walls and drapes, in the wallpaper and on the upholstered furniture. Here's some video of the rooms:

It's Bridget Otto Thursday!

Motoya Nakamura, The Oregonian
Sara Ledoux and two of her children, Elizabeth and Alexander, enjoy some family time.

Bridget A Otto tells us today that Sara and Steve moved into their NW home that "the previous owner had done a precise and careful update to the property." Sara added color in the formal dining and living rooms, but something was missing. Enter interior designer Kimberlee Jaynes to take it to the next level.

That's what so great about using a designer.  Through their education and experience, they can get you the "final layer."

Otto quotes Jaynes:
"That's one of the things that is challenging, the final layer," she says. "You don't see the importance until it is done. Before, you can't figure out what's wrong with the room, and you don't want to spend any more money, but something's not right."

For those of you following local sports Kimberlee Jaynes is married to the "Godfather", Dwight Jaynes, and is referred to as the "goddess" by sports fans.

It's Bridget Otto Thursday!

It may be Thanksgiving, but it is also Bridget Otto Thursday and today Bridget knocked herself out!  First, there's Hot new looks for fireplaces.  Our friends interior designer Kathia Emery of Emery & Associates Interior Design, interior designers Amanda Klash and Emma Davis of Montgomery Klash Interior Design, and interior designer Alice Dillon of Alice Dillon interiors reworked problem fireplaces with great looking results.

Second, Bridget writes about Home style books to warm hearts and hearths.  Any one of the books would make a great Christmas gift.

Bridget Otto Thursday

Bridget Otto has a story today about Tina Enomoto. How when she moved to Oregon from California she looked for a horse-friendly property, with a view and charming. She knew she found it when she looked at big red barn overlooking McMinnville and Carlton with a view of Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams.

Can't you just picture living there when your mom would say, "Close the door! Do you think you live in a barn?"

"Well, yeah, Mom. We do"

Randy L. Rasmussen, The Oregonian

Bridget Otto brings us two stories this week in Homes & Garden, an Oregonian feature section.  The first, Hang Time, is about a new way to suspend a tree house designed by Schuyler Silva and Devin Zoller.  Mike asked if he was too old to have a tree house.  "Yes, honey, you are!"

The second article, Double Makeover, shows us how Arlene Lord of Mosaik Design remodeled two rooms for two sisters, Aili and Anya.  Included is an interview with Lord about creating rooms that can grow with the child.

Bridget Otto Thursday

Yesterday, at Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery, Cary Taylor, Allison Smith and Bev Landfair hosted an event for area interior designers that covered "what's new and unique in the world of furnishings, color and rugs."  Bridget Otto was there and files a report today about the content of the meeting in Portland designers gather and learn about custom creations.

Although I've never met Bridget Otto, Bev tells me she looked stunning with her blonde hair. Thank you everyone for attending.

It's Bridget Otto Friday

Keep on eye on this Bridget's blog for a peek into a interior design presentation in September tailored for those in what the design industry simply calls "The Trade."
Three veterans of interior design will host a presentation showing off all that is new in custom rugs, wall decor, paint, furnishings, texture and more.

Bev Landfair of Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery, Allison Smith of Allison Smith Design and Allison Smith Color Seasons, and Cary Taylor, territory sales manager for Fabrica Fine Carpet & Rugs, are planning a not-to-miss

Since the event is not open to the public, I will be there, bringing all the news back to you.

Stay tuned. I think you'll enjoy reading what these talented gurus of design have to offer those in the trade.

Bridget Otto Thursday On Saturday

Photos by Doug Beghtel/The Oregonian

Yes, it's Saturday and I'm late with Bridget A Otto. This weeks Otto subject was friend Kathryn Delaney owner of ColorSplashes. Delaney found Portland via a circuitous route from South Africa and claims Portland, Oregon is the best place on Earth to live. Her art started with faux finishes, to murals and then original art. Recently, she's gone digital.
"I've been getting into taking my art digital. Once I've done the piece, I get them professionally scanned."

From this digital source, she has them printed using the giclée method, which reproduces an archival-quality print.
It appears to be an easy jump to wall decals when your art is digital. Delaney is an infrequent, but interesting blog poster at ColorSplashes.

Once Again It's Bridget Otto Thursday

Thursday, Bridget A Otto wrote about two designers and how they added color to the homes of their clients.

JJ De Sousa, owner of Digs Inside & Out was called in to do a consult for Sharon and George Alexander. In their home painted in neutral colors, "George grumbled over a living room he never used and Sharon simmered about how the house felt, well, not fun." De Souza picked up on the colors in the couple's art collection and used those colors in the draperies and furniture. After De Souza's work, "George says his home feels more contemporary and reflects the love of life he and Sharon share and their personalities."

Bridget Otto writes that Lori Land lived on a houseboat that was so drab, it "faded into the woodwork." She wanted to bring in more color, but was fearful of the leap. She'd scribbled down the phone number of an interior designer, Allison Smith who owns Allison Smith Design but had never called. By coincidence she came across Smith again and decided to meet.

"...over the next few months ... Smith helped Land turn her houseboat into a vibrant home that has Land's friends saying, "Oh, Lori. This is so you."

We love stories about designers, how they work and how they can change a house into a home. Otto comes up with some great examples of interior designers and the design process.

Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery supports the interior design community and encourages you to call one for your next project.
