What Is Sensuede By Duralee?

Did you know that Duralee has an upholstery fabric called Sensuede that is eco-friendly? Eco what?

Sensuede is a luxury faux suede entirely made from high-purity recycled polyester (from PET bottles, fabric and apparel). The production process is eco-efficient too. “Given the concern with conserving natural resources and reducing the burden on the environment, it makes sense to be Green” explains the company.

Both sides of the fabric are properly finished “for a smooth drape and easy ability to contour to any shape and style of furniture”: wall-coverings, drapery, bedding, pillows, sofas, loveseats, dining chairs, recliners, handbags, picture frames, etc. From aircraft, cruise ships, yachts and RVs to corporate and executive interiors, restaurants hotels, home theater seating and bar stools.

If you have a dog like we do, you know dogs love to get up on the dofa and you can't always keep their paws clean, It's a dog! With Sensuede from Duralee you can toss the cushion covers in the wash and they're as good as new. Another point to mention, it is generally cheaper by the yard than its competitors.

Duralee Teams With Clarke & Clarke

Duralee has really generated buzz this year so far. In February following the success of his first print collection for Duralee, Thomas Paul expanded his offerings of iconic patterns with Thomas Paul 2. You can see some of his samples in our blog post New From Duralee Fabrics or better yet, come into our showroom.

In April we asked the question What is Ikat? and showed that Duralee is well represented in ikat this design trend.

In June we brought to your attention that the Big Kahuna of Fabric Design, Alfred Shaheen, was coming to Duralee. Alfred Shaheen is the big Kahuna designer of the postwar Hawaiian clothing movement.

We also shared with you that Duralee has just introduced a fantastic new fabric group, "The Wainwright Collection". This is a traditional collection of fabrics with more exciting and up to date colorways.

Now we learn from Fabrics & Furnishings Int. that Clarke & Clarke, the U.K.-based fabric and wallcoverings editor has announced that Duralee, one of the U.S.’s largest textile companies, will be the exclusive distributor for its products in the United States.

DuraLee Presents The Big Kahuna Of Fabric Design

I mentioned that I was reading Casual Living the other day. There's another article that I want to direct your attention to, "Fabric Colors signal rebound" by Jamie Sorcher. In the article Sorcher says that consumers are looking for mood-lifting bright colors and that is a key sign of life for fabric makers and casual furniture retailers.

One thing that caught my eye was the mention of Alfred Shaheen and the introduction of fabrics by DuraLee's subsidiary Suburban Home. Alfred Shaheen is the big Kahuna designer of the postwar Hawaiian clothing movement.

Shaheen’s graphic prints, with colors pulled from the petals of the hibiscus flower and the waves of Waikiki, elevated the status of these often-quirky garments from kitsch to high fashion.

Capturing the spirit of the Aloha culture, tropical leaves, bamboo stripes and whimsical fish have danced across Shaheen’s apparel with universal appeal. The Surf And Sand Indoor/Outdoor Print Collection captures these fanciful patterns that evoke memories of luaus, sultry breezes, and the sweet scent of plumeria leis and adds a fresh twist with new scales and colorways to fit today’s modern applications.

What is Ikat?

I was glancing through the May issue of Elle Decor, where "trend alert" tipped us to the hot, "exotic motif with ancient roots." Ikat! Then the next day I saw Heidi Klum pictured presenting the "Project Runway" award to Seth Aaron Henderson and she's wearing an Ikat fabric dress.

What is Ikat (ē'kät)?

Ikat, or Ikkat, is a style of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft before the threads are woven to create a pattern or design. A Double Ikat is when both the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before weaving.

Ikats created by dyeing the warp are the easiest to make. Before the warp strings are attached to the loom they are arranged into bundles. Each bundle is tied and dyed separately, so that a pattern will emerge when the loom is set up. This takes a good deal of skill. The tightly bound bundles are sometimes covered with wax or some other material that will keep the dyes from penetrating. The process is repeated several times for additional colors.

In December of 2008, Design*Sponge wrote "...even though ikat has had its run in the home design world over the past year or so (and has been in vogue many times before) the fashion world seems to bringing ikat back again with the spring/summer 2009 collections."
