Tips to Arrange Living Room Furniture

If your present furniture arrangement seems stale, put some pizzazz into your living room.

1. With a tape measure, find the dimensions of the room. Draw the outline to scale on graph paper. A typical scale is 1/4 inch equals 1 foot.

2. Mark anything that would affect your arrangement: outlets for electricity, telephone and cable; light switches; windows; doors that open into the room; space between windows; and sill height.

3. Make scale paper cutouts of your living room furniture and shift them on the room drawing as needed until a likely arrangement emerges.

4. Select a focal point for your room and subtly orient other furnishings and some lighting toward it. If there's a fireplace, it will nearly always be the focal point; other focal points might be bookcases or built-in shelving to house lovely collectibles, or a sofa with a striking painting on the wall above it.

5. Arrange the furniture in such a way that pieces viewed as a unit don't show dramatic variance in height and mass as the eye sweeps the room. When a high-backed chair is next to a low table, boost the visual height of the table by hanging a piece of art above it.

6. Set up cozy conversation areas so that when you entertain, people can be seated and chat rather than having to stand. Examples would include two chairs separated by a low table, or two love seats facing each other.

7. Pull furniture away from the walls for more flexibility in creating conversation areas. For example, use a sofa to divide space in a room.

8. Position the sofa so it's at a nonperpendicular angle to any walls to create drama. Perhaps put an area rug and coffee table parallel to the sofa.

9. Allow a minimum of 18 inches (24 is better) for traffic lanes through the room. Lanes will probably meander if you have two or three conversation areas in the room.

10. Freshen the room occasionally by shifting the furniture and accessories for a new look. Switch tabletop bric-a-brac around, add fresh flowers, change potpourri, move pictures.

Tips to Hang a Bamboo Chair

Hanging chairs lend a lot of fun to any room. As long as there is room to negotiate around the chair and account for the radius it will swing, the next part is easy. There are a number of types of hangers to use to add even more
fun to this type of furniture.

1. Determine where your bamboo chair should hang. Consider that the chair has a swing radius, so it cannot be located too close to the walls, windows or other furniture it might hit.

2. Note that directly above where the chair will be is the stud to which it will be attached. Understand that it must be attached to the direct center of that stud in order to hold the weight of the chair and its occupant. Use the stud finder to locate the selected stud as well as the studs on either side.

3. Move the stud finder along the width of each stud and mark where the sides are. Studs can be located 16 inches to 24 inches apart. Find the next stud to know how many inches apart your studs are. Locate the third stud on the other side to be sure of how wide each stud is and confirm how far apart they are located.

4.  Mark the center of the selected stud. Drill a ¼-inch pilot hole through the ceiling and into the center of that stud. Use either a 3/8-inch eye bolt or a lag eye hook combination to screw into the wood. Always use wood glue on the screws of the bolt before screwing it in to insure a tighter bond.

5. Confirm that your bamboo swing chair has an S hook to attach to the ceiling apparatus. Use that hook, or attach a swing/swivel spring that will allow the chair to rotate and bounce as well as swing. The chair is now securely screwed into the ceiling stud and will hold the recommended amount of weight of an average person.

Tips to Install Hanging Mirror on the Door

A mirror is a necessity in any home whether it be in the bedroom, bathroom or other location. For those who are short on wall space, hanging a mirror on a door is an effective solution. Installing a hanging mirror on a door is not always as easy as it may appear at first. Proper mounting techniques secure the mirror firmly so that jarring and normal house vibrations will not dislodge it. If not mounted properly, the mirror will fall and possibly shatter into sharp pieces.

1. Place a level on the door at the location where the top of the mirror will be placed. Draw a straight line across the door using a pencil.

2. Ask another person to hold the mirror up to the door so that the top of the mirror is perfectly aligned with the pencil line. Outline the other sides of the mirror using the pencil. Set the mirror in a safe location.

3. Make two pencil marks on the upper left corner of the mirror outline where the clips will be located. The first mark should be approximately 2 inches from the corner on top of the mirror, and the second mark should be 2 inches from the corner along the side of the mirror. Repeat the marking procedure so that each mirror corner has pencil marks on either side of it. There will be eight pencil marks in all.

4. Place one plastic clip at the left bottom pencil mark so that the straight edge is positioned upwards toward where the mirror will be. Insert the screw, provided with the clip, into the top of the clip and secure it in place with a screwdriver. Repeat the process to install a clip at the bottom right pencil mark.

5. Pick up the mirror and carefully slide it into the free edges of the two bottom clips so that it rests on them.

6. Ask another person to hold the mirror securely to the door while you install the remaining clips in the marked locations.
