Window Box Planters For The Neighbors

We have a small tradition in our neighborhood.  When we get a new neighbor, the existing neighbors contribute toward the purchase of a window box planter for the new family. The planter given to us was a cedar box, 36” X 10” X 10” given to us in 1995 and it still sits on the deck today.

In a change from past years, Bev just filled it with one tomato plant and two basil plants.  I can taste the pesto she’ll make now. Most years it is planted with Cosmos, because they are tall and look pretty in the summer.

Many times we give plants to our mothers on Mother’s Day or plants as get well presents, but how many times do we give window boxes that can be mounted or set on decks and porches.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and materials from vinyl, wood, metal and fiberglass.

We’ve noticed that the terracotta pots on the deck, seem to suffer in the winter even if we are able to bring them to a sheltered part of the deck. We find they split and flake off.  Our friend Carol made us some great pots from rolled clay slabs, but they also have suffered.  I suspect it’s time to repot our plants with different materials.

Mustache Madness 13th birthday

When I began my reign as The Unusual Farm Chick, Panda was 6 years old. Over the years many of you have shared in watching her grow into a young lady. The laughs, the smiles. The tears and the amazement.

Remember when?

Her 6th birthday, a Fairy theme which included many of her school chums in her kindergarten class. Many of whom she is still the best of friends with.

Well our little girl is no longer so little and her choice of party themes has gone from fairy wings & strawberries to Pizza and... Mustaches?!

Yep. Panda will be 13 this 4th of July and I have been swimming in Mustache madness. Apparently the whole Mustache madness is all the rage. From accessories to shirts and on down the line. She already has the earrings & the necklace. So when she requested a Mustache theme, I was not surprised. An outdoor bonfire with Mustache loudness.

So what is a Mom to do when she is fronted with such an odd theme? Hit the net for some inspiration.

I whipped up her birthday banner using a rough weave fabric I scored at the Thrift {6 yards for $2!}, grabbed some black grosgrain wide ribbon {$2} to fold in half for the bunting string, sewn on leaving an extra foot for tying purposes. Plus I had leftover black paint from last years Glidden paint sample giveaway. Using Freezer paper to trace/cutout the Mustache clip art & stencil letters , Followed with ironing the freezer paper in place before brushing the paint on.

Voila' !

Using the Freezer paper stencil idea, I whipped up a few shirts with her 'stache of choice onto a White Racerback tank top. She is wearing it over a long Dark Purple tank top {you know how Layers are still popular}. The party color theme is Black, Dark Purple & accented with white. You'll have to wait on seeing the shirt until she debuts at the party.

I also found Mustache cookie cutters by Fred & friends which I purchased through the livingroyal.com amazon website for $10 {after S&H}

We also found the local Dollar tree {everything is a $1} carried some great "cheesey" adhesive mustaches. Fuzzy felt & actually stay on your face! One for each guest.

Skipping through the whole strings of lights & paper lanterns decor, lets skip to one of the big projects I am taking on while I am currently down with some kind of crazy early summer "monkey pox" aka- the common cold {not so common for me}.

A Photo booth! Just like this simple frame form, I am putting one together for the teens to enjoy.

Photo Booth from eatdrinkbemarried.tumblr.com

I even found the cutest Mustache touch sign to print out & frame for it's sign:

I have been so busy in getting things done between the cold medicine knockouts and the body aches, that I have yet to bring the camera out back & snap away with all the new wonders abounding here.

I'll make that my next mission. I'll share it very soon. But for now, I have a Party to finish prepping for.

Sweetest Dreams,

~Tammie

We Love Al Fresco Dining.

We were invited to a good friend’s 70^th Birthday party.  You know when you give a garden party in Oregon before mid-July or after mid-September, you need outdoor patio heatersto guard against icicles hanging off your guests noses. You may need more than two in our state.

We will be celebrating our 20^th wedding anniversary on July 25^th.  We were married in an orchard on a 90-degree day.  I still can remember the beautiful sight of Bev walking out of the trees on her father’s arm. A year after we were wed, one of Bev’s best friends married on the same date at Black Butte by the lake and it was unseasonably cold for that time of the year.  A wedding can be spoiled if your guests are uncomfortably cold.

We love al fresco dining.  It’s a causal way of dining in a garden atmosphere where we can hear the birds, feel the breeze and the sun and smell the fresh air as we savor the delightful flavors.  In Mexico, when we dine outside, we get the added bonus of the stars and the sounds of the surf.  Very few times has it been cold enough for heaters, but the waiters assured us one cold evening that this was unusual for March. They are trained to say that.

Speaking of casual dining, I love buffets.  I love to go down the event serverline before the tops are lifted imagining what’s been cooked inside.  Then, I grab my plate as I balance my drink while holding my napkin and silver ware.  Next I put down my drink to dish some of the many salads on to my plate. I grab a roll and butter.  Then pick up my drink and move on, all the time chatting with those I’m with about how great everything looks.  There are usually rice or potatoes fixed one of many ways, so I put down my drink and dish up the carbs, pick up my drink and move on.  I’m running out of room before I get to the prime rib.

I remember being in Dallas at a buffet hosted by my friend John May of May Petroleum.  He was ahead of me in line and when we came to the Baron of Beef.  The chef was slicing off thin pieces to make it last, I suspect.  John said he would like a piece this thick, holding he thumb and forefinger about a half inch apart. When it was my turn, I said to the chef, “I’ll have what he had!”

When I sat down at the table I realized I forgot to pick up my drink again. Buffets are great.  The best part is going back for dessert.  There are usually more than a dozen offerings and the trick is to eat as many as possible without people getting wise.

On January 15^th of 2014, I will be 70.  I’m going to have a party outside…in Mexico.
