We have been super busy for the last week. The rain caved a 1 foot section of the solar pit and has been causing me major upset over so many delays. I decided to just work through the rain and get the poultry their new housing. It's not cordwood as we wanted but there is a reason for that. It's not painted and there a few finishing touches to be done- ummm hillbilly air conditioned nest box's for now... But it is bad enough I am building a solar pit which may be used just this one winter before we are out of here. Well worth it if we can have the land we both desire. You will see the coop once it is finished. Not ready to share when it is still in mid project.

I have a realtor coming out on Thursday. We have been in this home almost 8 years and being our first home which we bought at 26 yrs old, we have made our fair share of mistakes. We made the mistake of taking out an equity loan after 2 years here. BIG mistake. So we have been paying out more then what it is worth. I know the economy is bad and putting our home up for sale is not going to get back what is owed. There is just too much to do to this place and I can not do it on my own anymore. The Captain works odd hours and I have had either a toddler at my feet or a baby on my hip for the last 10 years. It has become too small for our family and it's time to move on.
We have been looking around outside of this area for a home with land. Each time we look at something, it seems to not fit us. The last one had a crazy neighbor lady who came over while we were looking at the place and she went on and on about how evil the last tenants were. There was more she said which made my mouth drop- which for me means it was truly crazy. Normally I just laugh stuff off but this lady..She was crazy. So the place was a no. I'm abnormal as it is, I do not need to live next to a nosey crazy lady.
So we have another place to look at on Sunday. Almost 27 acres with a house so old I am surprised it looks half way decent. Built in 1860! "Sound structure, new electrical and plumbing, The roof was done in the last 10 years". We decided the best way to get land is to buy an old house which sits on large acreage. As long as it is livable for a few years, no reason not to consider it.
I call this one the spooky room picture. It shows the plaster walls need repair but those curtains just yell old spooky house...

Live in the house for a few years, parcel it off with 2-4 acres and resell it to pay for our home to be built. Without discussing numbers, lets just say with this place if we were to go for it the house would be sold with 3-4 acres for $85,000. A great deal for someone who likes old houses and they would still have some land with it. We would keep 23 of the acres and have our house built on it. We are still stuck on the one we found through Menards-with a few tweaks which do not raise the price much. I will post pics of the 1860 house this weekend. This is the one we want to build with the loft upstairs extending the entire house length and made into 2 bedrooms for the kids:

I love the french doors which are access to the kitchen and the other to the living room. We both fell in love with this place. Be sure to click on the blue highlighted sentence above for more info on it including supply costs. We estimate about $60,000 maximum for construction costs and well/septic installing. So you see? Flipping the old house would pay for almost all of the new house.

I have Biga starter to whip up for my bread making. I have a goal of 16 loaves to make and sell at Friday's market. Next year, I will raise the price to $3 a loaf when I hopefully have longer bread pans. For now they are in regular bread pans until I can afford "real" bake ware for making Artisan Italian breads.
A coop to paint and finish last details. A sign for the exterior which will read "Garden Coop" and a yard to clean up. Plus have Farmer market signs to make. The list is never ending...
The fire to burn all the scrap wood will have to wait till the weekend.
Crossing fingers the realtor will be able to sell this house close enough to what we owe and not be on the market for very long...
Sweet Dreams,
Tammie

Heads up! Turkey puke!

I made a very satisfying trade this weekend with Beth and Kevin. A few box's of Canning Jars for 2 of these:

I bought the third so we could have a Tom for Thanksgiving and a breeding pair to keep.
I have only had the chick turkey's so these juveniles are a whole new adventure!
For starts...I did not know that a turkey could fly as high and as far as the female did last night. She flew from the pen almost to our house...Of course the truck was parked next to the house so I could unload them earlier in the day. See how far that is?
A good 35 feet- maybe more with her a good 10 feet high.
Well in flight, The Captain had his back turned from the pen and I yell "Head's up! Turkey!"
But then I notice some white liquid coming from her mouth (later I figured it was from the milk we put in a bowl from the kid's half filled left over cups- nothing goes to waste).
She missed the Captain with her projectile but his truck did not. She tried to land on the top and came down into the opened driver's door, leaving a wonderful splash of turkey vomit on the door and roof...
The Captain grabbed the turkey as she fell against the door and I started laughing so hard while backing away from the drooling bird. He kept trying to hand her to me and I just could not do it. I was laughing so hard trying to run away from his out stretched turkey filled arms. Of course the neighbors sitting on their porch watching the whole thing along with the people looking at the House for Sale across the road, could be heard laughing as well

She got a wing clipped to prevent any more air time as well as her male friends.
So now...we have Turkeys! And I am so happy to have them. It is so awesome to hear their gobbling and peep noises while outside. I so love it! Thank you ever so much Beth and Kevin! It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you both. I could have hung around for hours more at your place. Such a nice set up and plenty of space to explore!
And Flipper is such a sweet goose. Better then a mean looking watch dog. An intimidating noise and fluff followed by such sweetness.

Let's add another project to the never ending list. I have a rope bridge to build, connecting the tree house platform on the "new to us" tree house swing set a neighbor was given by a neighbor, at the new home they bought.
Tractor Boy and his dad moved it to align the spots for a rope bridge to span between the 2. Too heavy to do by hand, so they brought out one of the tractors for the the job.
I still have some leveling to do this week & am thinking the 5 foot distance is perfect for a bridge. That old multi color tarp is going to the trash and a camo one will be put in it's place.
Still no word from my brick guy so I think I will see if my money will go to another company that may match the pricing. Another stall in getting the solar pit built- PLUS they are calling for a week of rain... I just hope the pit stands strong and does not cave in the sides with all that rain.
I am trying a new bread this week at market. I sell out very quick with what I bring and it is so nice to hear people say they come JUST for my bread. They bring their mom's and friends and tell them to get there early since I sell out so quick.
I am trying a dill flavor Artisan bread from my Macrina Bakery book. So far I have done the Tomato spinach basil Rustic Italian, Garlic Rosemary and a Rosemary red onion Rustic Italian. I only have 10 pans and the bread is almost 2 days to make. After making the Biga starter 2 days before then making the bread (a total of 3 hours process before the pan rising time)They sit in the bread pans for 6-8 hours over night for rising in the fridge then I bake all morning of the market day. I need more pans!
I charge $2.50 a loaf. I go by that price after seeing other bread artisans charging $3 a loaf or 2 for $5. I will not charge more then what I would pay myself for something. I refuse to take advantage of people. Yes, I need a profit and do get one, but no reason to over charge for something as they do at the yuppy Farmer's markets.
So, new turkey's, new play set, new bread. And the current project I am TRYING to also work on is the new garden sink. I bought a very nice white enamel/porcelain coated steel heavy sink off Craigslist for $10. A few scratches in the back corner but nothing bad. I like it SO MUCH more then out current sink I have conned ...I mean asked the Captain to remove our old sink which is a stainless steel light weight crap and put in the new one. It is deeper too!
I can't wait for him to finally get them switched since the sink counter table is built and awaiting the sink to be placed before I can tile it. Then it will be moved into Western front corner of the garden( gate trellis end) where I will use some of my flat river rock for a "patio corner" effect.
He keeps putting me off but if it is not done today, then I will just do it myself- garbage disposal and all. Now where did I put that DIY book with instructions on sinks...
Sweet Dreams,
Tammie

A week of WOW's....

We have been harvesting a lot due to the rain and an infestation of squash bugs. This sunflower which was bigger then lil' man's head was the first. All of the seed will be saved for next years planting. I like the short height and fat heads to make a wall of them along the roadside. With taller ones just behind them.

Then the Long Pie pumpkins had to be pulled despite not having all their vines and stems drying to show readiness.

Then it was time to make a big decision. It was a hard one but it had to be made.

The Captain needed 2 new tires for the back of his truck. Walked out in the morning to a flat on one side and the other was already using the spare...So there went $300...

That was money meant for the digging of the solar pit. So I had to make a choice. Camper or solar pit?

I went with this:

4 feet deep and ready for the block walls this weekend.

I was fortunate to find a wonderful company not far from me called Jeff's remodeling. He did a great job (and his pricing was very nicely competitive!)and gave me lots of helpful tips to make it a success. Of course just 1/2 hour after it was dug, the God's decided it was time for happy tears in celebration of my accomplishment... But the pit has remained strong. Now if I can just keep the kids away a bit longer till the walls are up...

The Tobacco has surprised me. This is the Havana variety for The Captain's cigars. There are 2 plants very close to each other. (lil man was snapping away and this was the only non blurry pic..)

A bushel basket gourd hanging from the garden fence. My baby brother was in town with Fiance' and he was the one to notice it. How could I have missed such a large gourd?

All the rain has afforded time in front of the sewing machine. I have been whipping up more aprons to wear at our Market stand and decided I may try to sell a few of my "re-lifed re purposed fabric" aprons. Of course my over thinking on occasion brought me onto the subject of how to display at the market with more class. I searched for a wired body Mannequin and missed the antique one on Craigs list by one day... So I made one up out of chicken wire, a planter container which goes on the top of 4X4 posts, a wooden dowel and 2 -2x4's. Voila'! A dress form which needs reinforced on the body but hey, I am almost there. This is a dress I picked up at the thrift store for super cheap and my hips were too big to fit. So I reconstructed it, into an Apron with back ties and wrap around chocolate color waist ties. (The rain was coming so the wind was a'blowing when I snapped this.)This my keeper apron. One of which I will wear during the Market days. All others I make are from Long skirts and are full front Bib style aprons with the same chunky wrap around ties for style AND a place to put the dish towel.

And one other big WOW happened. As I came back from inspecting the solar pit, I found this little guy laying cold and wet on the ground. I was so afraid the pups would get it before the mother so I never put him back out. We are tending to him until he can be released back into the yard. This is our second baby squirrel we have raised since living here. The first which was missing 90% of her tail recently passed away at 7 years old. A neighbor found her by his truck a few months ago.

Who knows. This may be one of her descendants since the nest in the tree was one of her favorite roaming spots.

Off to sew. I have 4 Aprons I want done for the Market on Friday. I need to brain storm how to reinforce that chicken wire dress form and of course what's a summer day without a jaunt into the garden for some thrilling weed pulling.

Sweet dreams,

~Tammie

Goal of the lemon...

I have a dream. An unspoken one that has only been shared with a few select people. More so in the fear I would be seen as more bizarre then they had thought before I shared my dream.

It started with the dream of a greenhouse. One to soothe my winter blues here in the north. A place where I can grow a patch of grass to lounge my bare feet, feeling the soft green blades caress my toes as I read a book or indulge in yoga. A place to transport me back to summer as the cold winter blows just outside my cocoon.

I get laughed at for that one before I even get to the rest so I always stop there....

I dream of having multiple greenhouses. One for the pleasure of a year round garden and my grass patch plus one.....

For a mass of Meyer's lemon trees. Yes. Citrus in the north. I dream of having a greenhouse dedicated to those sweet smelling tree's which bare fruit almost year long.

"Less acidic than traditional lemons, Meyers have a tang that's surprisingly softened by a beguiling sweetness. A cross between a lemon and a sweet orange, imported to the U.S. from China exactly 100 years ago by the man whose name they bear, the Meyer lemon is a furiously addictive fruit.

With sweeter juice, a thinner peel, less acid and a more floral scent (and taste) than other lemon varieties."

The times I let myself drift off into my dream, I envision Marvin Gaye playing in the background as I hand pollinate a mass of Meyer's lemon tree's. Whispering sweet crooning words to the delicate petals as I caress a q-tip covered in pollen to each waiting flower.
Crazy, ay? But nothing I do or dream seems to be "Normal".

I have read of a man in Wisconsin who has many greenhouses where he produces citrus and sells locally.

Meyers lemon tree's are more hardy for northern green house living and due to not having the ability of shipment ease, would be a welcome site for local chef's and restaurants. Not that it will make a large income but will afford me the luxury of a personal greenhouse and out of the work force zombie zone. I am not one to enjoy being stuck in a building of people. The politics and drama which come with the scene. I have tried. Really I have, but this...This is my niche'. I have such a love for growing things. Plants and animals are far more enjoyable then bending my life to fit for others.

So go ahead and laugh if you like. I have outed myself and am proud.

I have 2 Meyers lemon trees in the living room as a start to my someday dream. I plan to purchase 4 more when Guernsey's $25 off $50 spending special comes up again. I will continue purchasing my tree's and they will go into the Solar pit greenhouse until the day my dream can be realized.

My goals have seen many changes more so due to the fact I share my thoughts and words with others and as I delve deeper, going through trial tribulation in the goal, I find it is not for us. But this is one which has stood through time and I see it IS something for us. Something even into older age I can do and succeed.
Sweet Dreams,
~Tammie

Shall I build a ship or just be a stronger swimmer?

I have been on a "blah" roll as of late. Not whining. Just explaining why I have been so absent. I have been working between rainfalls on the pizza/bread outdoor oven. I have not gone past the brick raised base... I have been drooling over machetes to cut down the weeds which have in some spots grown thicker and taller then my plants in one 4 day spell of rain! I have been trying to sell of alot of extra's in the house such as one of 2 patio couch sets...I mean really.Do we need outdoor seating for 15? Or that hutch which collects dust in the basement and I really do not like it's look anyway.
The worst part is all my red tomatoes(the marmandes) have rotted before fully ripening thanks to this immense daily fall of water from the gods. I mean hey. Guys! Can you possible use a wider spray to thin out where it falls? I am all for sufficient rainfall but getting so much rain that the ground is not having a chance to dry out before the next is getting out of control. And the staying between 75-82 F degrees in freaking July and August?!! O.k Now I am whining...
I am just disgusted by my garden. This is the worst garden I have ever had. My weeds are more abundant then the produce. I just want to go in there with a brush hog and wipe the slate clean again.
Next year's best friend? Black weed blocker cloth for the immense 100X60 plot! And the pond is down..The pump is having issues and a coon ate all but 2 very quick bluegill. No more orange slimers swimming around adding color to the green brown water.LOL
Now on to better happier happenings.
I am trying to get enough money from all the extra's in this place to buy a oh so cute and much (inspired from Gina at Caldron Ridge) vintage camper adventure. I was entertaining the idea of one and then I read Gina's post....I was hooked and following her a jump into adventure!
I found 2 I would like at an amazing price that I can renovate this winter.
One is in Michigan 4 hours from here and the other 1 hour away. Now I just need to raise $400 to decide which one I get... Both are in great shape inside and the outside just needs some TLC.
The michigan one:
And the local one:

I am doing the big Hartville Flea market this weekend, which brings in over 1,ooo people on Saturday's. I am crossing fingers I can bring in at least $100 that day from our produce table. I plan to bring the patio set to sell with our produce, jams, breads and dry mix's. I also have the local market on Friday late afternoon. So maybe I can make $200 total from the two(with the sale of the patio included.)
Wish me luck! 2 more weeks until the sun pit is finished being dug and it should...I repeat should..be ready the end of September. Just in time for some winter sowing.
Then it's time for that cordwood chicken coop/rabbit retreat!
Sweet dreams,
~Tammie
