Be Different, "Don’t Chase Money"

I came across a wonderful site, (Robert) Sonneman A Way Of Light. "Robert Sonneman pioneered modern lighting making it an art form. World renowned and acclaimed for clean lines and alliance to form and function, his world famous award winning designs have been at the forefront of the design world for over four decades. Robert introduced sleek, new functionalist lighting designs in the 60s and 70s that have become classics of the modern era."

He recently wrote the following message, "Don’t chase money. Create something of value and let money chase you." I liked it so much that I'm reprinting it here:

In a society that values money above ability and respects wealth above talent it is no wonder that making things well became less revered and less aspirational to succeeding generations.

Acquisition is the idol that we worship at the alter of capitalism. But often those who have attained most are left empty by the process because the value created is only the sum of their positions.

Respect and self esteem are powerful motivators which we derive from the gratification of the process and the product of our work. I believe that it is more satisfying for wealth to be attained through the effort of creating something of intrinsic value that we feel good about and take pride in, as opposed to simply manipulating a system to our numerical advantage.

Generations have worked with pride at various trades and crafts passing down acquired skills as their legacy to those who followed. It was the natural order of survival and the university for the young who followed the old. With the knowledge of a craft well learned came the pride of a job well done and the gratification that comes with creating value from ones personal effort.

What I would say to the young is: Don’t chase money. Create something of value and let money chase you.

Find something that love to do and do it well. Allow your passion to drive your ambition. It will become your life’s work and your identity. Money comes and goes. It is good to have but in the ups and downs of life, for most of us, the passion for doing what we love and believe in survives the ebb and flow of financial fortune.

Top Projects of 2011

Hey Friends!

I wanted to share with y'all what I've been up to in 2011 and recap some of the projects I've completed. It's always fun to look back and see what I’ve accomplished for the year. I've had such a busy year with renovating and opening our antique store, redoing tons of furniture throughout the year, starting my blog, and working on house projects too. So I have much to share this year, I just can't believe its flown fly so fast.

Our store's one year anniversary is January 4th. It was so much fun to be so productive and to get lots of things accomplished in 2011. Starting a business was a huge change and major accomplishment for me this year. I'm so thankful and blessed at how successful our store has done this year. I'm sending out a huge THANK YOU to all of our sweet customers and supporters! I LOVE what I'm doing and appreciate all the business; we couldn't do it without you. Here's to another successful year!

Let's start with the remodel of our store.

BEFORE
Ugh... When we first started the remodel, the store had two different colors of commercial grade carpet that was so disgusting and ugly; it all had to be ripped up. We did an overhaul on our store with fresh paint on the walls and floors, we added and closed up walls, redid the bathroom, painted the outside awning and interior brick, then finally we hung floor to ceiling burlap drapes in the front three windows and added all the furniture and merchandise.

AFTER
What a major difference!

Now onto a few furniture makeovers. We've completed and painted over a hundred pieces of furniture this year.

Then we did a little summer backyard and patio makeover at our house.

I'm looking forward to what 2012 has in store for our business and my personal life. God sure has blessed me this year by putting special people in my life that are truly blessings and now great friends! We will be coming up on mine and Jacob's fifth wedding anniversary in June . . . where has the time gone!?

In 2012 I hope to travel more, help others more, grow more spiritually, meet more inspiring people, begin to grow a family and my business, and grow closer to God and my family. I have so much to be thankful for!

What are your goals for the upcoming year?! I would love to hear them! Wishing you a Happy New Year.

A SUPER COOL PENTHOUSE, A HOUSE IN CADIZ SPAIN AND A VACATION HOME ON LAKE SUPERIOR

A SUPER COOL PENTHOUSE, A HOUSE IN CADIZ SPAIN AND A VACATION HOME ON LAKE SUPERIOR

TODAY I AM WRITTING ABOUT THREE VERY MODERN HOMES. ONE LOCATED IN A PENTHOUSE SUITE, THE SECOND IN CADIZ SPAIN WHICH IS SPECTACULAR, AND THE THIRD IS ON LAKE SUPERIOR, ONE OF THE 5 GREAT LAKES AND THATS A STUNNING HOME AND MY FAVORITE OUT OF THE THREE..

Enjoy the pics and posting.

Interiors: L Residence

As  a general rule, we’re not super into blue in an interior space. That’s a bit harsh…we mean, there are lots of ways in which blue can totally make a space rock, but you really need to have a cool hue. This home, the L Residence, totally gets blue right. And they also get details right. It’s a modern loft space with lots of cool interior additions and rooms and cool wood flooring and modern furniture and more. And is that a Magis Chair One we spot?  By Min | Day. From architizer:
“Located in an Art Deco hotel recently converted for private condominium use, we designed a penthouse apartment with a roof deck overlooking the center of downtown Omaha. For the L-shaped unit we created a set of nested spaces with a grand room that appears as an exterior within the confines of the dense walls. 15-foot ceilings allowed the construction of a cozy mezzanine along the vertical path to the private roof deck above. Primary wood veneered walls hide bedrooms, house utilitarian areas, service functions and bathrooms.”

Live Modern: House in Cadiz

Live Modern: Weekend House on Lake Superior

We’ve always thought good architecture was just as beautiful as art, but all the photos from this home in Cadiz, Spain are so stunning they could easily be seen in an art gallery! Truly, these shots are of an amazing home that is nestled among coastal nature in a surprising way. Modern, clean lines mix with beautiful, random nature and the coloring of all the architecture is such that it both blends and contrasts with the surroundings.
“The house is situated on the occidental edge of the natural park of the Estrecho, on an abrupt hillside, where the landscape value, its orientation and complicated topography are determining factors. Instead of viewing these factors as potential limits we considered them to be incentives for a better solution for the project, helping reinforce the intrinsic singularity of the emplacement, to which service is set this construction.” Designed by Alfonso Alzugaray Arquitecto.

We’d be much more able to withstand frightful winter weather outside if we lived in a stunning piece of modern architecture like this! It’s hard to tell if the home would be more visible in warmer, more colorful months, but there’s something so slick and camouflaged about how it looks now. Located near, you guessed it, Lake Superior, in Schoeder, Minnesota and designed by Julie Snow Architects.

“The weekend house is reduced to a few essential elements. The main house and a small studio are arranged on a black platform that rests just above the ground. The two black volumes frame the water of Lake Superior as it extends toward the distant horizon.

The presence of the lake is pervasive throughout the house. A long simple white table runs parallel to the lake. A narrow vertical tower encloses the fireplace. A row of cabinets along the north wall conceals the complexities of daily life. The house provides a serene connection to a beautiful, rugged landscape. Concealed by trees in the summer, the black boxes slip into the winter landscape of black and white tree trunks.”

Three really cool homes,
