Whole Orange & Raspberry Blender Muffins

Contributor post by Lyndsay of Coco Cake

Yep. You really did read that right. Blender. This is a variation of a fast and funny recipe from the wonderful Canadian cookbook icons The Best Of Bridge. In our family, we grew up on Best Of Bridge recipes...we are children of the 1980s... my mom's collection of their cookbooks are tattered and splattered, and no Christmas morning would be the same without the "Christmas Morning Wife Saver" casserole... (a questionable name in this modern feminist age but just right for the 1980s!)

Congratulations go to ZGF Architects for Interiors Awards 2013: Healthcare from Contract Magazine for the design of Randall Children’s Hospital

"Located on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus in Portland, Oregon, the 334,000-square-foot facility consolidates services that were previously housed in disparate locations and connects to an existing hospital building that still provides support services. Appropriately, the new facility references its Pacific Northwestern context, but also takes cues from hospitality design and the visuals to which children respond positively."

Combatting the fear and anxiety experienced during hospital visits is especially challenging for children and their families, but the ZGF design beckons children to come in and play.

Real Wedding: Rimi + Jean

I am so excited to share this next wedding with you photographed by Toronto photographer, Celine Kim who journeyed to India to attend her dear friend Rimi's wedding. Celine captured the colours so amazingly, and this set is sure to delight. As many know, Indian weddings last many days with multiple events - here is just one part of what was a week long festival.  My favorite parts are all the colours of course, the beautiful swags on the car above, more hanging off the trees, the lights on the buildings, the drapes, all so magical. Be sure to pop over to Celine's blog here to see more of this beautiful and unique union.  Thanks Celine (and Rimi and Jean) for sharing!

New Shop Alert: The Ring Cozy

How cool are these ring cozies? Ana Maria of Anamu (a former contributor here on Poppytalk) has a new venture I'm excited to share with you today (and so fitting for the season of love). After having trouble finding a place to put her ring while out exercising or playing sports, Ana Maria came up with this brilliant idea she has created called the Ring Cozy to protect your ring while exercising. Just cover up and go! She's designed two different styles for rings with or without raised stone settings and will have sizes for men and women.  Click here for more info!

DIY Framed Sheet Music

I came across this great idea from The Inspired Room and just had to give it a try. She used old book pages to make framed art, but I decided to use vintage sheet music instead. Both will work just fine for this project.

This project was great for all of those empty frames sitting around our store. I enjoyed making this framed artwork because it was SO simple and I already had all of the materials I needed on hand.

Here's how to make your own framed artwork.

ONE: Find a large frame to paint.
TWO: Choose a book to rip apart.
THREE: Arrange the book pages to fit inside your frame.
FOUR: Use double sided tape and attach the book pages to each other.
FIVE: Cut foam core board or cardboard to your frame size.
SIX: Use spray adhesive and attach the book pages to the board.
SEVEN: Staple the back of the board to the frame.
EIGHT: Hang your frame and admire your DIY Framed Sheet Music.

The Big Salad: Greek-Style Keeper Vinaigrette + Salad

By Jeannette Ordas of Everybody likes Sandwiches

I'm not sure if I can call this salad a real honest-to-goodness Greek salad. For one, there's no tomatoes. It's winter here and I just can't justify using tasteless tomatoes. Truthfully, I'm not really a true raw tomato fan. So there's that. The other thing is that I add a few more ingredients than just cucumbers, peppers, onion, feta and olives. In fact, anything that looks good and has some crunch is a viable option when it comes to this big salad. I even scrape out the slimy seeds from the cucumber to keep things in tip top shape. No slime balls here.

Crunch is an important factor because this is what I call a Keeper Salad. I make a big batch of the stuff on Sunday and I keep it in a sealed glass container in the fridge for the rest of the week. I dip into it daily, adding colour and flavour to my lunches on these drab winter days.

The key to a keeper salad, besides choosing the right crunchy vegetables, is to separate the ingredients away from the dressing. No soggy salads here. First I mix up the vinaigrette and I make sure that I use ingredients that will keep for a good couple of weeks in the fridge. There's no raw garlic or fresh herbs to turn slimy and black. Instead, I cheat and  use garlic powder, onion salt and dried herbs. It's a fantastic dressing that I keep in a small mason jar in the fridge.

Once the dressing is made and the vegetables are chopped, it's smooth sailing from here on out. Only when my salad container is nearing empty, I'll restock and make a new salad batch. If you wanted to add in chickpeas, cooked faro or chopped chicken or tofu, I'd add those to your plate, along with the cheese and olives, rather than the big salad. Separation is key, remember? So enjoy your crunchy Greek-style salad all week long.

Keeper Greek Vinaigrette
1/3 c extra virgin olive oil
1/3 c red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons dijon mustard
1-3 teaspoons honey or agave syrup
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion salt
1/4 teaspoon mixed dried herbs (basically a blend of thyme, basil, oregano)
kosher salt & freshly ground pepper

In a small jar combine all ingredients, shake well and taste. Adjust seasoning to your own preference. The dressing should keep in your fridge for about 2 weeks.

Winter Keeper Greek-Style Salad
Substitute the vegetables as you see fit - I skipped the carrots + fennel this time around, but they do make wonderful additions. Crunchy is key to a salad that will last all week long. I was worried about adding fresh dill to the "big bowl" but it stayed fresh for 4 days with no wilting or slime.

2 large red peppers, diced
2 large green peppers, diced
1 bulb fennel, sliced thinly
1 large carrot, sliced
1/4 red onion, sliced thinly
2 green onions, sliced thinly
1 large English cucumber, seeds removed, chopped
several sprigs of fresh dill, stems removed, chopped

Toss everything from the peppers to the dill in a large bowl and then transfer to a lidded storage container. I like those glass-lock ones. Keeps in the fridge for 4-5 days.

Arugula
Kalamata olives
feta cheese, crumbled
protein or grains (like chickpeas, faro, tofu, chicken, etc.)
keeper Greek vinaigrette

When ready to serve, dish out the salad into individual plates and toss with some arugula, any protein or grains, and then sprinkle feta a few olives over top. Drizzle with your vinaigrette.
