Dispatches from Milan: Design Week 2013

I'm leaving you this week with a few photo's from Design Week in Milan. Paula Andrea Callejas Greiffenstein and giovanniviscomi.com was kind enough to send over a few pictures of what she saw. And I hope to have a few more trickling throughout the weekend. First off a little stop to Superstudio Più. How cute are those bamboo shopping bags (above) from Yod Corporation and the Thai tableware "Slow hand design - Thai-a-spice".

Dispatches from Milan: Fix Your Bike!

Fix Your Bike is a brand new adhesive graphics kit (designed by Tagmi) to customize bikes. It's currently on show in Milan, during design week, in a few stores and around the city with the Tokyobike tour. The kit is printed on polymer film which is waterproof, UV and abrasion resistant. As you see in the video it's also super-easy to apply and remove!

Dispatches from Italy - Officina Dolce

Contributor post by Kat of Zero the One

Some time ago I found this tiny pasticceria café, walking distance from my son’s school and the architectural marvel that is Macro Museum at Via Nizza. The first time I walked past it I thought, well that’s pretty. The simple vintage look and feel was definitely something different from normal Italian/Roman café’s and bars. I went in and was even more surprised to find Red Velvet cupcakes (two things non-existent in Italy). Well of course Italian cuisine is top ranking, Italian pastries too, but growing up with birthday sponge cakes and salty breakfasts, it’s just nice to have a little familiar treat every now and then.

Dispatch from Italy: Affordable Art Fair

Guest contributor post by Kat of Zero the One

Who would’ve thought the day would come for an affordable art fair in Rome? Well here it is! Welcome to the Affordable Art Fair, a concept that could potentially reinvigorate the arts scene by allowing a wider range of people to access and purchase art. All art is less than 5000 Euros and features new talent with a diverse array of styles and disciplines. Not only does it allow for emerging artists to be seen, it also invites people to start collecting art. Check out their comprehensive Art Buying Guide.

Here is a short video I took of the event:

I was thoroughly impressed by how prepared they were from start to finish with an information booth providing assistance and insight to newbie collectors, covering everything from securing certificates, packaging and transport.

Macro Museum of Contemporary Art is the right setting for such a concept. A former slaughterhouse, the new use of the space is a creative transformation in itself. Now they are host to many contemporary art shows, a must see if you are in Rome.

Should you be curious to see more of an artist’s work, assistants or the artists themselves will gladly show you what isn’t already displayed.

They did not fail to include workshops where anyone and everyone is encouraged to use and interact with available tools.

I saw this and thought it looked familiar. It seems like the same street artist whose work I featured in my post on Turin.

Last but not least, I was really happy to see a space just for kids. Here a big white wall is free for all the little artists to paint on.
