Globes With A Special Touch... Different and Delightful

You all know how much I love a good globe! Anything map related is fantastic in my book, and a lovely globe really gets me excited!

I couldn't resist buying myself a little globe last weekend when I was out looking at mirrors. I didn't find any mirrors that interested me, but my little globe was very satisfying. It was almost twice the price of the bigger globe you can see above (which I bought at a flea market very cheaply), but at $24.95 I was still happy to add it to my little collection. Thanks Freedom!

If you know me well you also know I have a 'thing' for butterflies.... so imagine my delight when I found the work of Wendy Gold which involves taking old globes and decorating them to turn them into something extraordinary.

Here's one of her butterfly globes...

Here's a globe with a family tree on it. And, yep..... I LOVE trees too, so this one's a stunner in my book as well!

There's also globes based on some well known and very well loved children's books like 'Where The Wild Things Are' and 'Oh, The Places You'll Go'.

I'd love to have a whole collection of these on display.

And, as I love globes, butterflies, trees, and books; these ones would be just grand.

What do you think?

Check out Wendy's ImagineNations website to see her full range of globes.

The Newest Additon At My Place - Introducing.....

Frederick!!

My mum gave him to me for my birthday a few weeks back.

Isn't he grand?!  :)

We'd spotted him around two months ago when we were both out together browsing through a huge flea market near Ballarat, and I just had to have him, so mum offered to make him my birthday present.

Perfect!

He was named on the spot, and then I had to wait nearly two whole months to get him.

My partner says he's somehow ugly and cute at the same time.... which I sort of 'get'.

But I think he's just downright gorgeous!

I speak to him and pat him on the head, and he always looks like he's got something really witty and insightful to say back.

He generally resides in the kitchen where I can see him a lot of the time, and is also visible as soon as you get inside the front door!

A lovely way to be greeted. :)

The Rug And The Culprit - Caught In The Act...

When I did part 6 of the 'quote journey' around my home, quite a few people mentioned their fondness for the rugs seen in the hallway, and some even wanted a close up!

I also mentioned how my cat Jessie likes to claw on them, and how it doesn't really matter (thank goodness), because due to their 'tufted' nature, the clawing really doesn't make them look all that different!

For the purposes of the promised close-up however, here's the afore-mentioned 'culprit' in action!

The colours aren't quite right, but you get the idea!!

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 6 - Dream Big!

This is Part 6 of the 'quote journey' around my home! I'm a bit behind, and was planning to do my living area next..... but today it's a little quote and phrase in my hallway instead. We'll get back to the living area soon!

Right at the end of my hallway, you can see there's a little something over on the right-hand side, just after that doorway on the right.

This is what it looks like close up!

That's what I see every time I walk out of my bedroom, whose doorway is at the far end on the left in that top picture (you can't really see it).

It reminds me that much of what I achieve depends on the thoughts I think, and the things I dream of and then plan for.

A little motivator to get each day off to a good start!

My trusty scrapbooking letters and another great greeting card are the source for this little display. It doesn't take anything expensive to create something inspirational.

It's been a 'short and sweet' stop on the 'quote journey' today! Next time I'll travel back up the hallway to the living room.

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 5 - Favourite Verse

This is Part 5 of the 'quote journey' I've been taking with you over the last several weeks! You can see the other instalments at the bottom of this post.

This week we're at the end of our 'dining/kitchen' quotes. These ones are at the very end of the kitchen over the stove, and are mainly 'verse' rather than quotes. You can see them waaaay at the end in the pic below!

Now, let's get a bit closer.....

And, a bit closer.....

And, a bit closer!

This first one has a verse on it entitled 'Be A Winner'.

The text is still a bit small in the pic, so here it is:

Everyone's a winner,
If that is what they choose,
Unless their choice is something else,
Then of course they lose.

Winners always have ideas,
While losers fix the blame,
The two might seem to be alike,
They sure don't think the same.

All winners have a dream,
Of what they want to do,
Then plan their life to reach their goal,
And make their dreams come true.

Losers see a problem,
In every good idea,
All a winner sees, is another chance,
To further their career.

This was part of a calendar I had years and years ago, and I loved this verse and the next one below so much, I kept them and popped them into frames.

I love this verse, and once again it talks about 'planning' being an important part of creating the life of your dreams. I keep a manageable list of monthly, and yearly goals in 4 main areas of my life (home, relationships, work, and personal), and try to review them regularly.

The personal part includes things like exercise, general health, diet, leisure activities, things I'd like to 'have-a-go' at etc. I have to admit I've been pretty slack at it lately, so I must try and get back to it.... there'll be a few I've achieved, and a heap more to add - lol!

My daily and weekly lists of things 'to do' tend to be way more haphazard, and I travel with several 'post it' note pads where things get scribbled and stuck in various places! Then they just get removed and chucked in the bin when I've done them. (Or more often, carried over to the next day/week and stuck somewhere prominent so I get to them).

This last one is another one of my trusty greeting cards! The text reads 'do not go where the path may lead'....

And, the text on the inside used to say (before I cut the other part of the card off).... 'go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail'.

It's a quote by one of my favourites Ralph Waldo Emerson, and describes a big part of my philosophy in relation to design and other things besides! I don't feel the need to keep up with trends, or arrange my home in a way that's pandering to what others would find beautiful.

I create my home to be a soul haven for myself. A place to nurture, support, and nourish me emotionally, physically, and mentally.

And, because the people who come to visit me are my friends and family, and they love me just as I am, then by default, if my home is decorated as an extension of my true self, they're going to love it too! It mightn't be how they'd decorate their own homes, but they feel comfortable, at ease, and happy here because they feel comfortable, at ease, and happy when they're with me! It's like they're getting me multiplied!

I don't think I've had many people walk into one of my homes for the first time who haven't spontaneously commented about how wonderful it feels, or how 'warm and welcoming' it is. The vibe and 'feeling' is something not communicated completely by any pictures I might show you here. It's an invisible and yet completely identifiable part of my home that seems to occur kinda 'organically'.

For a bit of fun, on my other adjoining wall, you can see I've got the words 'yum, yum!' It is a kitchen after all..... and most of the time I don't do too badly in the food department!

I hope you enjoyed this week's part of the journey. Next week we'll have a look at some of the quotes in my living area.

It's An Owl Doorstop!! Plus, Some Of My Own Owls...

How cute is this!! Pretty obvious why I love him, being the owl fancier I am!

Here's a group of some of my owls. These ones reside in my living room on one of my bookshelves. The little one was given to me by a close friend, who bought it while she was overseas in England. It's a Minerva Owl (named after the Roman Goddess of wisdom). These owls are meant to be potent symbols of wisdom and philosophical thought.

The second biggest one was also given to me by that same friend. We were out shopping together and I pounced on it, and she then pounced on me, swooped it out of my hands, and declared she was buying it for me! It has lovely red eyes, which made it all the more attractive to this 'red' girl. As you probably noted, it opens so you can put little treasures in there!

The last big, goofy, silly looking one was bought by myself. A little bit of a departure from my usual owlishness, but every group has a 'funny guy' don't they - lol! This one does anyway.

What animals do you have an affinity for? Do you collect any?

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 4 - Cards and A Scroll!

This is Part 4 of the 'quote journey' around my home! You can find links to the first three parts at the bottom of this post!

Today I'm moving the camera around from where it was in the pic below, so you can see the doorway to the left, and the pelmet above the sliding door.

On top of the pelmet there's three cards I adore. One's just got a lovely pic on it of a little girl with a gorgeous red rose, but the other two have wonderful quotes on them.

Here they are......

I've always loved these quotes, and finding them written on cards with some pretty images attached was a bonus. I used my scrapbooking guillotine to cut the cards in half neatly, and displayed them where I can see them. They're a bit high up, but I know what's on them, and I love the colours in them.... they just suited that spot for an extra burst of happiness!

Now, back to the little sort of 'scroll' on the wall next to the fridge. Such a pertinent quote I think. It's a reminder that we don't have to be perfect at something to have-a-go at it. The enjoyment is in the doing. Sometimes I think we all hold back and worry far too much about what others will think.

'Let it all hang out and have fun' I say!

The other two cards above and below the scroll are from my 'Ultimate Calling' card set (featured in Part 2 - A Door Of Inspiration), and they say 'Be Inspired', and 'Be An Example Of Inner Peace'!

I think I manage fairly well at the first one, and I'm still trying to get better at the second one - lol!

So, there you have it! A few more of my favourite quotes and phrases stuck around my kitchen (blu- tac is my favourite decorating tool!).

There's a couple more to go at the very end of the kitchen next week, and then we'll wander on into the living room for a brief visit.

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 3 - A Very Meaningful Fridge!

This is part 3 of the 'quote journey' around my  home! You can see part 1 here, and part 2 here.

After last week's look at one end of my little dining area, I've turned the camera around, and am shooting from a position right next to the soul gardener's quote on the wall, and standing right in front of my 'door of inspiration'.

The first thing I focus on when I walk in my door at night is the side of the fridge! Can you see it further up there?

It has the words 'Welcome Home' on it. And, I always feel welcome and 'at home' as soon as I get inside my little home. I love it!

Also on that side of the fridge, to go with that message, is a picture of my mum and dad. Their presence makes me feel connected to my home. My beloved dad passed away 12 years ago when I was 32, and I miss him so very dearly. He was a HUGE part of my life, (I was a daddy's girl), and we did lots of outside things together like fishing, yabbying, and rabbiting (I was a tomboy and we lived in a rural setting) when I was little.

He also taught me how to ride a horse, and how to drive a car. And, being a mechanic, he basically 'put together' my first car so that they could afford to get me one. Having a picture of my dad and mum (from about 16 years ago) before he got sick is a beautiful momento to enjoy, and just makes me feel grounded.

The card with the butterfly verse on it is there to go with the photo. At my dad's funeral, the minister included a lovely passage about how after we die we're like a butterfly finally coming out of our chrysalis and blossoming into the full potential of our soul. Since then I've always had a real 'thing' for butterflies, and they feature alot in my decorative bits and pieces.

The verse on the card reads....

'Beautiful memories never fly away...
They stay with us
They comfort us
Forever.'

You can see a lovely butterfly magnet on there as well, (and there's more of them on the front of the fridge along with one of my favourite prints from spectacular artist Marisol Spoon on Etsy), and there's another magnet with 2 children hugging that says 'To have joy, one must share it'. You can also see one of the same series of cards from my 'door of inspiration' with the words 'Live Your Passion' on it.

I try really hard to live my passion every day.... that makes me a more joyful person, and then I can try and pass that joy on! It all works together and makes me feel better within myself, and better as a contributor to the lives of others. My mum and dad were the mainstay of my happy childhood and core values, and I hope I do them proud in today's world and with how I'm creating my life.

So, all these little bits and pieces on the side of my fridge go together to welcome me home every day, ground me, and remind me of what's important in life.... family, love, passion, and compassion.

Next week we'll look at some more quotes on the wall right next to the fridge, and the ones I have sitting on top of the sliding door pelmet right near them!

Until next week, live your life joyfully and passionately!

Linda. xox

P.S: It says 'My Supplies' on my kitchen pantry because they were the only words I could make from my diminishing hoard of scrapbooking letters at the time!! LOL. When I get some more letters I'll probably change it to something else. There was a mark on the door I wanted to hide.... so that's what ended up there!!

P.P.S: Guess what's opening next week?!! Finally, yay!

Through My Kitchen Window...

Over at Julie's lovely blog Swedish House, she's just started a 4 week 'link up' series called 'Tuesday Through The Window'!

Everyone's invited to link up with a picture through one of their windows, or a favourite window elsewhere.

Julies's window picture is absolutely divine. She has a little road leading to a gate, lots of green grass, and loads of lovely trees and forest.

Mine is a little closer in - lol. I live in a unit, so I don't have much outdoor space. My next door neighbour's side fence is about a 2 metres away. BUT, I do have enough room to have a couple of Golden Wattle trees planted between my home and the fence!! The only window I can see them out of is my kitchen window..... so there's something gorgeous to look at while I'm standing at the sink doing chores, which is lovely, because I hate doing the dishes!.

Here's my window.....

If you have a window in your home, or a favourite window from somewhere else that you'd like to link up, head over to Swedish House and join in the party!

Linda. xox

P.S: I'll be back later on today with a 'modernistic' home that's got sheep in its living room!

P.P.S: And, tomorrow I'll show you the inside of the kitchen area in the continuation of my 'Quotes Around My Home' journey.

Oh, and don't forget to throw your hat in the ring for the 'Hobbit Give-away'. It finishes on Saturday, and there's only around 13 entries so far, so you've got a good chance of winning!

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 2. A Door Full Of Inspiration!

This is the second step on my 'quote journey around  my home!' (You can read more info about the 'journey' in this post).

These inspirational words aren't exactly quotes, but they are phrases of inspiration that I refer to regularly.

They're on the door I walk in and out of multiple times a day, (it's the door to my garage from my little dining area), so every now and then I make sure I take the time to re-affirm 1 or 2 of the phrases on the cards.

The cards come from a box of cards by author Wayne Dyer called 'Inspiration - Your Ultimate Calling'. I have lots of these diplayed around my home, but I sorted through the deck and picked some of the ones that really resonated with me (and blended in colour wise - lol!!). Others that I like can get 'rotated' into my displays at some stage.

If you look closely at them further down in this post, you'll also see they have butterflies on them..... a really meaningful trigger for me... and something that connects me with them in a deeper way.

They also have a lovely passage of text on the back to go with the words on the front. This is why my cards are only loosely stuck to the door with blu tac.... if I feel the need to turn them over and re-read the back of them.... I can! Then I pop them straight back on the door. The one below is not up anywhere at the moment, but I love it..... so it may get 'rotated in' later on.

If you saw the quote from last week's post, you'll notice that these cards are right next to it! You can see the 'soul gardener' quote over there amidst the butterflies on the wall.

The door is going to get painted out at some stage, which will make the room look bigger! But, I'm waiting until I repaint the whole living area in a warmer colour, and I'll do it then. When I moved in 2 years ago, the unit had just been freshly painted, so I've been putting off the whole 'painting thing' for a while..... but I have to get to it because I really do 'need' a slightly warmer colour on the walls (rather than the grey which I find chilly!).

The bookcases are all on the list to be painted too - lol - that's been 'going to happen' for years!

You can see my living room through here.... and if you look, you can see more of these cards down the side of the bookcase. There's another bookcase on the other side of the couch with cards down its side too! They're close by if I'm sitting on the couch and need a bit of inspiration!

Here are the cards on the door in close up so you can see what they say......

Each one is very important to me... and something I try to weave within my life. (Although, I have yet to master the art of meditation... my mind never shuts up!).

The one that says 'forget about the cash value' is ringing true at the moment. I have a good part-time job (primary teaching) that pays the bills, so I have time to focus on my designing, my blog, performing, and other creative things. My newest venture is my online cushion shop, which has been near completion for ages, but should finally be up and running within 2 weeks!

If I worried about making  money from this shop....... I'd never do it! It's never going to make me much money. In fact, at the moment, all it's done is put me in debt to fill up my stock cupboard with gorgeous cushion covers. But you know what?........

I don't care.

One of my other favourite inspirational pieces of text is from something I read ages ago, (can't even remember what). But, it talked about following your bliss and doing what you love to do. It went on to say that you can really tell if you love what you're doing if you'd do it without being paid.

There's heaps of things I enjoy doing that actually cost me money, but I do them anyway....

I perform in amateur theatre. The standard of our shows in Ballarat is very high, and a 'season' can continue over many weeks, so it's very exhausting (late nights and still getting up and going to work). We have to pay our membership fee to be part of the performance. Doing shows like Les Miserables is worth it!

I don't ask any money to help friends or even acquaintances with their interior design... I just love doing it! (I do if it's someone I don't know).

And, even if this cushion shop only sells one cushion a week and barely makes any money.... I'm still going to have a blast doing it because it means I have an excuse to research and source gorgeous, handmade cushion covers..... I get to look at them laying prettily in my stock cupboard..... and then I get to share them with other people who hopefully find as much delight in them as I do!

Call me silly, but it makes me happy!!!!

Of course I couldn't do it if I didn't have a 'day job', but I'm truly grateful I can. :)

Next week I'm going to turn the camera around, shoot towards the other end of the dining area, and show you the words and quotes in part of the kitchen.

They're on the wall, on the fridge, on the pantry door...... so lots to look at!

Linda. xox

PS: Did you notice the owl hanging from the doorknob? (I'll give you a close-up another day. He's pretty gorgeous!) I have an owl on every external door except the glass sliding door. (There are 2 owls just outside that one). They're my animal 'totem' of guardianship.... I like them watching over my home. Supposedly, if you have an animal you're strongly attracted to over all others, they're your 'totem', and, meant to protect you from harm. Makes me feel good anyhow, and that's what's important!

P.P.S: I'll be putting up the post for September's Lovely Links Party tomorrow. If you have a post from September you'd like to share, I'd love you to link up with some words and a pic.

See you tomorrow!

A 'Quote Journey' Around My Home... and Two Lovely Blog Friends!

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know I'm a huge fan of inspirational quotes, affirmations, and any 'words of wisdom'. I have many books filled with quotes from varying categories (motivational, inspirational, love, work, success, finding peace, harmony, friends, family etc), and I refer to them often.

I also have them plastered around my home on my walls, inside cupboard doors, on room doors, down the sides of my bookcases.... anywhere they'll stay put with a piece of blu tac!

As much as I try to feed my body nourishment through delicious yet healthy food, I try to feed my mind and soul through enlightening and encouraging words of wisdom.

I particularly look towards people I admire for little gems of inspiration.... if a person I admire has given sage advice in a few succinct words or phrases.... I think it's prudent for me to take note. And, if they've come up with some witty and zany remark to make me laugh out loud... that deserves display too!

So, I've decided to take you on a step by step journey of the quotes, wise words, and plain old 'fun' words around my home.

Each week (until I run out), I'll post a pic of one of my quotes (or a few if they're in a group together), and tell you a bit about what it means to me, and where in my home it actually is (yes, I have quotes in my loo!).

Here's my first quote (very dull and dreary outside today.... so pics are a bit darker than I'd like, even with photo editing!).

I found this quote around 3 years ago when I was searching for a card for a close friend.... and immediately loved it. It encapsulated the way I felt about that friend... and made me go all gooey inside! So, I bought 2 of the same card, and gave one to my friend, and kept the other to put on my wall.

I often end up doing this when shopping for cards. I have a box full of cards with beautiful words on them that I keep to rotate in and out of display if I feel like it!

My love for butterflies (you can see my fave butterfly plate in the pic below!) fitted in beautifully as I always have some spare ones hanging around in my little 'decorations box', so they went up around it.

This quote is on the wall in my teeny dining area...... when friends or family visit for a cuppa or a chat around the table, they're the living embodiment of how the quote makes me feel.

Speaking of friends... I'd like to mention 2 lovely ladies who've become very good 'bloggy' friends. They were the first 2 bloggers to start commenting consistently on my blog, and I can't convey in words just how much I appreciated their kind and thoughtful comments.

I often gain extra insight into my own thoughts due to their interesting tidbits of information and personal thoughts on a subject. They've made this whole blogging experience more joyful and enchanting.

Bobbi is a spunky, fabulous, deep feeling, cottage loving, cat adoring, vegetarian, lover of colour, who blogs over at The Lazy Designer. I LOVE Bobbi's wit and sense of humour, and I always look forward to hearing what she's up to. She's in the process of setting up a shop in 'the real world', and she's giving us sneak peeks as it progresses. Plus, Bobbi's in Italy...... sigh...... and she takes glorious photos of her day trips and surroundings.

Nerine is super-seriously-talented at painting, embroidering, and all sorts of crafty things. You can visit her blog here! I love her quirky, whimsical, and charming hand painted pictures of robins and little girls. I love her honesty, authenticity, and willingness to show her projects at various stages of completion. Her blog heading says 'Nerine's Skirts and Other Stuff', and I have to say, her sewing skills are magnificent on more than just skirts.

Thank you ladies for making my world a nicer place and being some of the gardeners helping my soul to blossom! xoxox

Linda. :)
