September's Lovely Links....

Hi everyone, it's the end of another month! Over here in Aus, September is the first month of Spring, but it's only just starting to warm up a little bit now where I live.

Which of your posts this month did you enjoy writing the most?

Link up below and share a pic and link so we can visit with you!

My favourite post this month was the first one I did about the 'quote journey' around my home. I got to feature one of my favourite quotes, and thank 2 special blog friends. That's the one I'm linking below!

A Weekend Wish..... Relaxing Somewhere Amazing, Like This....

Spring is finally here, and I'm even looking forward to the Summer months. How magical would it be to find somewhere like this to lay and relax on a lovely warm, scented, Summer night!

Bliss!

May you find your own blissful place somewhere quiet this weekend.... a place to relax, unwind, recharge, and replenish.

If you're looking for some good books to read whilst you're relaxing, I came across this great post over on Indie Fixx yesterday. It lists 6 sites that are really useful for finding new and exciting books to read.... amongst them 'Library Thing', and 'What Should I Read Next'?

Definitely worth checking out.

Linda. xox

P.S. A little later today I'm going to put up a post for September's Lovely Links... so, if you have a fave post from the month of September you'd like to share with everyone, I'd love you to join in and link up with your post and a pic!

See you soon. :)

A Quote Journey Around My Home - Part 2. A Door Full Of Inspiration!

This is the second step on my 'quote journey around  my home!' (You can read more info about the 'journey' in this post).

These inspirational words aren't exactly quotes, but they are phrases of inspiration that I refer to regularly.

They're on the door I walk in and out of multiple times a day, (it's the door to my garage from my little dining area), so every now and then I make sure I take the time to re-affirm 1 or 2 of the phrases on the cards.

The cards come from a box of cards by author Wayne Dyer called 'Inspiration - Your Ultimate Calling'. I have lots of these diplayed around my home, but I sorted through the deck and picked some of the ones that really resonated with me (and blended in colour wise - lol!!). Others that I like can get 'rotated' into my displays at some stage.

If you look closely at them further down in this post, you'll also see they have butterflies on them..... a really meaningful trigger for me... and something that connects me with them in a deeper way.

They also have a lovely passage of text on the back to go with the words on the front. This is why my cards are only loosely stuck to the door with blu tac.... if I feel the need to turn them over and re-read the back of them.... I can! Then I pop them straight back on the door. The one below is not up anywhere at the moment, but I love it..... so it may get 'rotated in' later on.

If you saw the quote from last week's post, you'll notice that these cards are right next to it! You can see the 'soul gardener' quote over there amidst the butterflies on the wall.

The door is going to get painted out at some stage, which will make the room look bigger! But, I'm waiting until I repaint the whole living area in a warmer colour, and I'll do it then. When I moved in 2 years ago, the unit had just been freshly painted, so I've been putting off the whole 'painting thing' for a while..... but I have to get to it because I really do 'need' a slightly warmer colour on the walls (rather than the grey which I find chilly!).

The bookcases are all on the list to be painted too - lol - that's been 'going to happen' for years!

You can see my living room through here.... and if you look, you can see more of these cards down the side of the bookcase. There's another bookcase on the other side of the couch with cards down its side too! They're close by if I'm sitting on the couch and need a bit of inspiration!

Here are the cards on the door in close up so you can see what they say......

Each one is very important to me... and something I try to weave within my life. (Although, I have yet to master the art of meditation... my mind never shuts up!).

The one that says 'forget about the cash value' is ringing true at the moment. I have a good part-time job (primary teaching) that pays the bills, so I have time to focus on my designing, my blog, performing, and other creative things. My newest venture is my online cushion shop, which has been near completion for ages, but should finally be up and running within 2 weeks!

If I worried about making  money from this shop....... I'd never do it! It's never going to make me much money. In fact, at the moment, all it's done is put me in debt to fill up my stock cupboard with gorgeous cushion covers. But you know what?........

I don't care.

One of my other favourite inspirational pieces of text is from something I read ages ago, (can't even remember what). But, it talked about following your bliss and doing what you love to do. It went on to say that you can really tell if you love what you're doing if you'd do it without being paid.

There's heaps of things I enjoy doing that actually cost me money, but I do them anyway....

I perform in amateur theatre. The standard of our shows in Ballarat is very high, and a 'season' can continue over many weeks, so it's very exhausting (late nights and still getting up and going to work). We have to pay our membership fee to be part of the performance. Doing shows like Les Miserables is worth it!

I don't ask any money to help friends or even acquaintances with their interior design... I just love doing it! (I do if it's someone I don't know).

And, even if this cushion shop only sells one cushion a week and barely makes any money.... I'm still going to have a blast doing it because it means I have an excuse to research and source gorgeous, handmade cushion covers..... I get to look at them laying prettily in my stock cupboard..... and then I get to share them with other people who hopefully find as much delight in them as I do!

Call me silly, but it makes me happy!!!!

Of course I couldn't do it if I didn't have a 'day job', but I'm truly grateful I can. :)

Next week I'm going to turn the camera around, shoot towards the other end of the dining area, and show you the words and quotes in part of the kitchen.

They're on the wall, on the fridge, on the pantry door...... so lots to look at!

Linda. xox

PS: Did you notice the owl hanging from the doorknob? (I'll give you a close-up another day. He's pretty gorgeous!) I have an owl on every external door except the glass sliding door. (There are 2 owls just outside that one). They're my animal 'totem' of guardianship.... I like them watching over my home. Supposedly, if you have an animal you're strongly attracted to over all others, they're your 'totem', and, meant to protect you from harm. Makes me feel good anyhow, and that's what's important!

P.P.S: I'll be putting up the post for September's Lovely Links Party tomorrow. If you have a post from September you'd like to share, I'd love you to link up with some words and a pic.

See you tomorrow!

Mile End Road... What A Home - Full Of Whimsy and Atmosphere!!

Back on 1st Option (where this previously featured home came from), I ran across Mile End Road. Love the name, and just look at the interior shots.

Talk about moody, atmospheric, eclectic, whimsical, theatrical...... and then some!

The kitchen alone just does me in! There's so much to look at. I'm a 'cocooner' (just made that word up), and I could cocoon myself in there all day. Not much light I know... but it kinda reminds me of all the books I used to read when I was little that were based in old houses with secret passageways and hidden rooms etc!!

I know a few of you out there who'll be fawning over the floors too - aren't they great!

And, there's one room that has something I've been absolutely dying to get for years now. One came up at an antique auction here a few weeks back.... but I gave up when the bidding went over $400 (which was still remarkably cheap..... I just wanted it to somehow magically come my way!).

Can you guess what it is?

You can see all 18 pics of Mile End Road over on 1st Option. Well worth the look, there's some more rooms not featured here!

A Second winner will receive a Mother Earth News fair bandanna & their Practical DIY projects Volume 2 CD-Rom
No worries. The above is for the grand prizes, but EVERYONE (O.K more like 2o of you) will receive your very own packets of Sugar baby watermelon & Baby Bam pie pumpkin seeds from High Mowing Organic Seeds!

And if you are placing an order with them BEFORE 11/1/10, I can hook you up with free shipping. Valid for 1 free shipping only per household. Coupon code is good for 1 time use. Will not be permitted for public site sharing.
The M.E.N Fair items were made possible by our very good friends over at Mother Earth News magazine/Ogden Publications. The seeds were made possible by Storey Publications (books for Country living since 1983) via Mowing High seeds. A Major Thank you goes out to all these great people who made this giveaway possible.

While at the event, I was rather intrigued by the top bar hives at the Bees landing booth. Although beautiful, I knew there was no way I could talk the Captain into a home for bees that would cost about $400. But, it did have me searching out top bar beehive plans on the net. I found this great and easy how to that I know someone I may recruit to help with the project in late Fall. (cough..cough..Chris..cough) We may just have our very own bees in the Spring!
So lets have a look at just a few other interesting finds from our initial tour of the big event on Saturday:
An outdoor brick oven built by Squirreltailoven.org
They build new or repair, "save" old brick style ovens. Check out their gallery, at link above, for more pictures.

These beautiful massive Draft horses were visiting with their handlers from
Firth Maple Products. They are utilized in the method of Horse logging. You can read more of the less soil impact logging on their site, linked above. They also do occasional demo's. Contact them for more information.

And check out this rain barrel! The owner painted the plastic barrel a neutral creme tan. Laid large fern fronds on it, then spray painted the dark green, leaving the barrel with perfect fern outlines. Great & inspiring idea for those of us who have those bright blue barrels and would like a way to make them not so much of an eye sore.

More of the weekends event coming soon. I am still going through all the footage...and still more to download.

To enter the giveaway above, leave a comment to this post BUT you are only eligible if there is a way to contact you through your profile/blog. Sorry guys. Gotta have a way to contact if ya win. You have until 9 am on October 04, 2010 to enter. Stay tuned for an upcoming (in October) Artisan bread video segment. Want a teaser? There will be a giveaway in the video, which will have 2 winners of a very cool prize like the item I use in the segment!
Best of luck to all who enter tonight's giveaway.

A Living Room Full Of Comfort and Ease

I can just imagine secluding myself in here for at least a day, curled up with a good book, a mug of milo, and some of my favourite treats.

The atmosphere in this room is just so relaxing and nurturing.

The collection of items on the mantelpiece looks fascinating, and the grouping of mirrors would bounce light all over the place.

And, being who I am, I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on those delightful looking cushions. :)

There's even a mirror ball! (Imagine the firelight glinting off that at night, and reflecting in the mirrors too....it'd be like a room full of little stars.)

Gorgeous.

Back Home & Hi Honey, we have a problem...

What a weekend. The Mother Earth News Fair was a hit! Over 5,000 people attended the first day. Self reliance/sufficiency were the hot topics and M.E.N gave it well. The workshops & lectures brought a wealth of information to all who attended. No worries, I will be sharing what oats they have sown, affording us the ability reap a portion of their skill. From cover crops to bread baking. From fermented foods to Natural First aid kits & how to begin your own backyard medicine cabinet.

We arrived at the Laurel Hill campgrounds just after 7pm. Enough time to get the tent up and build the fire. "White willow", my camera girl, was my accomplice for the weekend.
This was our first ever ski "chair lift" ride. Both of us are not fans of height, but I made her promise if she has to puke, do it below her towards the BMX riders and not at me or the camera.
Her knuckles were white from the gripping but she was a trooper.
All endured for sharing with you, this amazing shot of the Seven Springs Mountain Ski resort:

Back to our first night ....
The weather was great for tent sleeping, minus the rain which fell, making for a slight chill the next morning. That is when the weekend took an ugly turn.
Lets begin with the emergency phone call to The Captain about 10am on Saturday. The number I called him from did not provide caller information on the caller i.d.

Hubs: Hello?
me: Hi Honey, ummm... we have a problem.
Hubs: What problem? whats wrong?
me: Ummm. well, I'm sitting here in jail...

Hubs: What!? wait. What?!
me: laughing...no just kidding honey calm down. I'm at this auto parts store and my battery is dead. as in no way it will work kind of dead. But I do not have enough for returning home and a battery. What can we do?

Hubs: sighs... will they take the debit over the phone?

So the great mngr of the auto parts (local owned) shop spoke with my husband and hooked us up.

Before he hung up, "B" the mngr asked me : "Do you want to talk to him before I hang up? "
me: Just tell him I love him.
"B": i'm not telling him I love you....
and hands me the phone as were both laughing.

BUT that is not the whole story. It starts at 8:30 am when we woke to start the car. We hear "click click" and nothing. Crap! So I went looking for a jump. A camp site not far from us had a few people awake & I did hate having to ask, especially as I could hear & smell breakfast was being prepared. The men from the site willingly came over to have a look. (poor guys had no clue what was in store for them). They brought their truck over to give us a jump. They tried for a good 15 minutes before checking out my starter. Doing the "hitting with a wrench" technique. Take in mind, these guys have no clue to who we are and came to lend a few gals in distress a hand, as their wives were back at camp preparing their warm breakfast. I did not even have coffee to offer them.
They spent a good 1/2 hour to 45 minutes with us. After figuring out my battery was dead & in no way taking a charge, they...hold on to your seat people... LENT us THEIR battery! From one of their vehicles! Just so we could get to the auto parts store and to the event. How freaking awesome is that?! That is just not something that happens anymore. Not only did they go back to a cold breakfast, they did all they could, to ensure we would be O.K. We had their battery all day plus they did not blink an eye when they found out the new battery had to be put in (with their tools since we had none) in order to get theirs back.

I found out they have a site and I would like to shout out to the world how awesome these 2 were. No questions. Nothing asked in return. Just helping out their fellow (wo)man with an open heart and now dirty grimed hands in return for their kindness. Speaks alot for a person with their actions. If I have a successful hunt this year, you know whose business I will support!

I had nothing to offer but some "special V.I.P" tomato seeds from our news press media grab bags. (But Hey! Only V.I.P's got those, so they were special seed dagonnit! LOL. )
So if you have a moment, give these wonderful gentlemen some support and hop on over to their site, ( http://www.killitandgrillit.info/ ) Tell them Those Unusual Farm Chicks sent ya...And thanks for the battery! Have a look around their site and if you are in the market, check out the information & recipes. Some goods for hunting & cooking they carry too. Not to mention some cool gun & hunting info.

I have some more unpacking to do and a few "toys" I can not wait to play with (Thanks to some awesome vendors/owners I met during our time away). I will share soon, some more weekend events and our "put a big N on our foreheads for newbie press gals" excitement.
Sweetest Dreams,
~Tammie

Remember When You Did This......?

Remember when you were a kid and you built a cubby house out of blankets and chairs, and bits of furniture or stuff from around the house?!

Remember what it was like curled up in there, hidden away, in your own secret little corner of the world?

Or, did you read your book under the covers at night with a flashlight, even though your parents had already told you it was time to go to sleep?

Ahhhhhhh..... the gorgeousness of having a cozy, secret, snug place in the world just for you, and to do something you loved.

Do you give that magical gift to yourself today?

Do you spend time creating your own cozy corner of the world and using it to do something you love?

If not.....

....... why not?

What's stopping you?

It doesn't have to be a blanket over a chair (although, who says we can't be 'kids' again)..... it could be as simple as a comfy chair in a corner of the room, some snuggly pillows, a glowing candle, a yummy treat, and a good book.

Time to delight in some simple pleasures again... we all deserve it!

Shop: Rebecca Cole GROWs

This past summer, I was saddened to discover that my favorite NYC spot--Japanese department store Takashimaya--had closed its doors on Fifth Avenue. My primary reason for making it a must-see was its basement restaurant, The Tea Box, which served healthy and affordable lunches. While there, I would check in on the shop's lush garden section for inspiration and unusual ways to bring the outdoors in. Thankfully, a new shop in the fur district looks like it has plenty of great garden and design ideas to share.

The new destination spot comes courtesy of Rebecca Cole, author of one of my favorite garden books--Paradise Found: Gardening in Unlikely Places. What is special about her work is that she outfits exterior spaces with as much thought as we usually give to indoor rooms and makes sure that indoor spaces are given healthy doses of plant life in unpredictable ways. Rebecca has a full-service design company with an emphasis on implementing green practices without sacrificing style. Her website, Rebecca Cole Design, is full of beautiful images of her shop, rooms and gardens she has designed, and events she has planned. I love seeing outdoor furniture given the Sunday best treatment (notice the tarnished metal bench topped with a row of feminine pillows for an event on the roof of Rockefeller Center).
